The Red Carpet Looks At The American Music Awards Were Messy But Fun
It’s not that the Grammys are for your parents, the Grammys are your parents. Old, strict, self-serious, adore Adele, and are prone to making arbitrary decisions like letting JLo perform a Motown medley. Just ask Halsey who basically yelled at them “you’re not the boss of me” during her acceptance speech last night at the American Music Awards. The AMAs are your cool, twice-divorced aunt who taught you how to french inhale and has a lover in Madrid who she visits every Spring. As such, she’s a lot more fun. But unlike your parents who actually clothe, house, and feed your ungrateful ass, her gifts are frivolous and tacky. But fun! That dynamic was reflected in the red carpet looks from last night’s AMAs. Risks were taken. Choices were made. For example, OG fun aunt Christina Aguilera showed up looking like a goddamn snack. A saltine cracker, specifically. Which is a shame because believe me, most of the people there were already very, very thirsty.
Billy Porter Made Emmys History Last Night (And Didn’t Shade RuPaul)
And no, Billy Porter didn’t make Emmy history for taking out dozens of heads with his bedazzled Hankerin’ For A Hunk O’Cheese-on acid hat. Billy made history by being the first openly gay black actor to win Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his role in FX’s Pose.
During his speech, Billy Porter preached about self-acceptance, he quoted James Baldwin, worshipped at the feet of gay TV overlord Ryan Murphy, and then showed love for his mommy by calling her the most resilient woman he’s ever known. And like me, it seemed like his mom, who was there with him, melted even though she was probably secretly pissed at him for nearly taking out her eye several times with that rhinestone-lined shoe horn hat of doom.
Ali Stroker Became The First Actor In A Wheelchair To Be Nominated And Win A Tony (Although, They Didn’t Have A Ramp For Her….)
You know how when someone gets kicked off of a competition reality show, they sometimes say, “Bitch, you haven’t seen the last of me!” I usually roll my eyes at them like, “Well, you’re probably right since I’ll see you working next to me at the dish washing station at Golden Corral after this blog goes bust and I have to get a job there too.” But some who don’t win actually go on to have full-on careers, like Jennifer Hudson, of course, Carla Hall from Top Chef, Katharine McPhee, Clay Aiken, Yaya from Top Model, and Ali Stroker from The Glee Project.
Ali Stroker (“Stroke her? I hardly know her!” – Ali, who definitely hasn’t heard that oh-so-fresh joke before) was runner-up on the second season of The Glee Project, and although she didn’t win, she did guest star on an episode of Glee, and later became the first actor in a wheelchair to perform in a wheelchair on Broadway when she was in the revival of Spring Awakening in 2015. Ali currently plays poly icon and wholesome ho Ado Annie in the reimagining of Oklahoma! on Broadway, and she already made history by getting a Tony nomination, and she made history again last night by winning. And while that was a big win for actors with disabilities, the Tony people won an award in the category of Are You Fucking Serious? by not having a ramp for her to get from the audience to the stage.
Judith Light Once Again Delivered At The Critics’ Choice Awards (And Other Looks From The Night)
There was lots of glamour, color, and levity on display on the red carpet for last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. And I’m going to go ahead and give all the credit to Judith Light. Judith set the tone, and everybody else did their level best to match her energy. There was probably a panicked buzz of “Judith Light, Judith Light, Judith Light” spreading among Hollywood stylists when they realized she was going to be there, forcing everyone to step up their game. Nobody quite got there, but they tried and that’s what counts. Ultimately, posing through Christian Siriano-made polka dots the size of dinner plates, Judith put all the kids on blast. If Judith wanted to be a real pal, she should have given a posing tutorial before the red carpet. Some people could really have used the help (see after the cut).
Billy Porter Showed Everyone How It’s Done On The Golden Globes Red Carpet
The red carpet at the 76th Annual Golden Globes is normally overrun with men in tight suits who look terrified to sit down and ladies serving tits galore in ridiculously expensive dresses. Yawns and eye rubs all night, right? That’s true unless you’re Billy Porter from Pose. If your eyes have never witnessed the magic that is Pose yet then stop what you’re doing and watch the first episode right now! If you have watched Pose then please get all the way into Billy, who portrays Pray Tell on the show, as he poses and slays everyone with a cape worthy enough for its own limited edition superhero series.
