Chris Pratt Will Voice Super Mario In An Upcoming Animated Film, And The Internet Has Thoughts On That

September 24, 2021 / Posted by:

Super Mario, the world’s most famous princess-rescuing Italian in overalls, will be getting another big-screen Hollywood movie. Mario’s first was the 1993 fever dream Super Mario Bros.: The Movie. This new one is an animated movie and the actor whose voice will bring Mario’s peppy, joyful Italian-accented personality to life is…Chris Pratt. If your immediate response was to check and see if I spelled someone else’s name wrong, well – you’d be in good company with the rest of the internet, who also have no idea why Chris Pratt got the job.

“The Queen’s Gambit” Director Scott Frank Got Dragged For His Long, Rude Acceptance Speech

September 20, 2021 / Posted by:

During last night’s Emmys,The Queen’s Gambit director, Scott Frank, won Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and took out two sheets of 8.5″ by 11″ paper before speaking for 3 minutes and 40 seconds (winners are allotted 45 seconds). After a minute and 20 seconds, the orchestra tried to play Scott’s ass off, and his response was a very entitled, “Really? No.” Then he sneered, waved his hand, and rudely said, “Seriously. Stop the music.” The music followed orders and stopped, but returned 25 seconds later. Again, Scott ignored it, although he gave a dismissive, “I’m almost done.” The music, again, stopped. One whole minute later (didn’t he say he was almost done?!) the music came back, and that’s when Scott decided to end his precious little speech and leave the stage. Hey, it’s Scott Frank’s world, and we’re just livin’ in it! Continue reading

The Hostless, Pre-Taped, History-Making SAG Awards Happened Last Night

April 5, 2021 / Posted by:

And it didn’t make history because it was the first time everyone in the audience and the viewers at home said the words, “Wow, what an enjoyable and short award ceremony!“. I’m sure some people said that, due to the fact that the SAG Awards clocked in at a tight 60 minutes, as promised. And there was no doubt a lot of people appreciated that a pre-taped show cut out the middle man (the middle man being a long-winded acceptance speech that begins with at least 9 full seconds of folded paper fumbling). But the big news was that for the first time in SAG Awards history, all four film acting categories went to non-white nominees. Like the category for Female Actor in a Leading Role – Motion Picture, which went to Viola Davis, seen above freaking out from the comfort of her own couch.

What Am I Looking At? The Golden Globes “Red Carpet” Posed Some Interesting Questions

March 1, 2021 / Posted by:

Last night’s Golden Globes ceremony was a haphazard Choose Your Own Adventure type situation where the stars could either get themselves all dolled up or they could choose to just Zoom it in wearing whichever housefit happened to be on top of the clothes pile. It was a confusing, disjointed show made even more so by the fact that I had forgotten I cut my cable a couple of months ago so I had to watch it unfold on Twitter. There were two red carpets, one in NY and one in LA, there was the Instyle Magazine elevator (above feat. Kate Hudson, a charcuterie board, and her brother Oliver Hudson), there were random elevators, hotel balconies, backyards, and portals into other dimensions. We’ve had a year of pandemic awards shows, you’d think they’d have figured it out by now. It should be obvious that they’re a bad idea!

The Queen’s Gambit, that show about an orphan chess prodigy who loves poppin’ pills and drinkin’ booze in the swinging sixties, is Netflix’s most-watched limited series ever. In its first 28 days, it has been watched in 62 million households. It stars Anna Taylor-Joy, who you also may recognize (sans floofy red wig) from her starring roles in Emma, Split, and The Witch. Peter Friedlander, VP of Netflix Original Series, detailed the show’s success in a blog post.
