There’s been talk about filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis for what seems like a decade already. It started with things like “who will play Elvis Presley?” “What about Priscilla Presley?” “Will the actor who gets the titular role actually have to choke down a peanut butter/bacon/banana sandwich on the toilet during filming?” Maybe that last one was just me. Now that the movie is in the can and we know all of the “whos,” Baz revealed some of the “whys.” People like Ansel Elgort, G-Eazy, Miles Teller and Harry Styles were talked about as possible Elvis-es before the role ultimately went to Austin Butler. Baz recently revealed the rationale behind one candidate getting tossed out: Harry Styles didn’t get it because he’s already Harry Styles.

There are a great many injustices in America, and it pains me to add this next one to the ever-growing list: the licensing company that controls Elvis Presley’s name and the image is ordering Las Vegas chapels to stop using The King’s likeness in their weddings. Great, now my quickie Vegas wedding will be officiated by “Schmelvis Kresley”. As I walk down the aisle he’ll sing “Always On My Brain” or “Can’t Help Falling In Like.” He won’t be allowed to wear an Elvis scarf or lei around his neck; instead he’ll opt for a live snake. And if the snake bites me, you bet your ass I’m suing that Elvis licensing company.

Instead, Austin Butler gets to use that line in his march toward Oscar buzz, and so far, the best that Gaga can hope for is a Best Original Song nomination for Hold My Hand (Take My Whole Life Too) for the Top Gun 2: Gaga’s Turn soundtrack.

Some of us might have watched the first official trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic, Elvis, and thought Elvis was a weird name for a movie that looks like it’s about Grease-era John Travolta. Maybe some of us shady types who think Austin Butler wouldn’t even place 5th runner up in an Elvis Presley look-a-like contest at a Florida state fair should wait until the movie comes out and stop judging a book based on its trailer. Because Lisa Marie Presley, someone who could be considered an expert on all things Elvis, believes that Austin Butler’s performance as The King is so good, he may as well start practicing his Best Actor acceptance speech for the 2023 Academy Awards in the mirror right now.

It’s been almost three years since relative newcomer Austin Butler was announced to star in Elvis, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic. At the time he won the role it was down to him, Ansel Elgort, and Miles Teller. Ansel went on to jinx West Side Story at the box office while ducking accusations of sexual misconduct, and Miles went on to star in Top Gun 2: Never Gonna Happen and get punched by a wedding planner while partying with Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii. So it looks like they made the right choice. But after seeing the trailer, I’m not so sure they made the right choice in casting Tom Hanks as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, a role that clearly should have gone to Jared Leto based on the sheer amount of prosthetics they plastered on him to play a man nobody even knows or cares what he looked like anymore.

Elvis Presley would have turned 85 today. But none of us will hear Elvis say “Thankyaverymush” to a peanut butter and banana birthday cake, because Elvis died back in 1977 at the age of 42. The memory of Elvis is still very much alive at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. Starting today and running through Saturday, Graceland will celebrate Elvis’ 85th birthday. Priscilla Presley will be there, as well as Lisa Marie Presley. Sadly, two of Elvis’ grandchildren will be MIA, because Lisa Marie is knee-deep in a messy custody battle with her estranged husband Michael Lockwood.
