The 2021 Tony Awards were as novel as the COVID-19 coronavirus which resulted in a truncated season that left Moulin Rouge star Aaron Tveit as the only actor nominated in his category. *Spoiler alert* He won. But this year, Broadway told that bitch Rona, “we’ll do it live, fuck it!” and came back swinging for the 2022 season. Today, the Tony Award nominations were announced, and sadly, Neil Patrick Harris was snubbed for his role in Inside Inside Edition: The Bill O’Reilly Story: The Musical. But that’s probably because A Strange Loop, the Pulitzer-Prize winning musical by Michael R. Jackson, that has an entire number devoted to reading Tyler Perry for filth, gobbled up 11 nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance in a leading role for newcomer Jaquel Spivey and Best Performance in a Featured role for John-Andrew Morrison. So really, Madea should be on her hands and knees thanking Michael R. for getting her as close to a Tony Award, and a Pulitzer, as she’ll ever get.

We all know by now that Scott Rudin is a nightmare boss who allegedly abused his underlings both physically and emotionally. And apparently, that includes Rita Wilson. BEFORE Chet Hanks really started wilding out! According to People, Rita says that Scott went out of his way to find a legal way to fire her from a Broadway play after she revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Rita told the New York Times that Scott was the type of person who makes people feel “worthless, unvaluable and replaceable” making it crystal clear that Scott never got the chance to hear Rita rap!

Well what do you know, something has finally been done about Scott Rudin, the ubiquitous entertainment industry producer who was revealed to be an alleged nightmare to work for by multiple traumatized former employees. After The Hollywood Reporter published their exposé on Scott’s reported behavior, I expected Broadway might be the first to turn up the house lights on his career and announce it was time for Scott to take an early intermission, if you will. Because the cherry on top of an already bad year, would be watching the audience cringe as they read the words, “Produced by Scott Rudin” in their Playbill. But Scott beat everyone to it, by acknowledging the allegations against him, and announcing that he was leaving several productions.

A little over a week ago, The Hollywood Reporter published an exposé on megaproducer Scott Rudin. They spoke to multiple former employees, who painted a very visual picture of what it was allegedly like to work for Scott Rudin. And the main takeaway from that exposé was that if those former employees were telling the whole truth, then Scott Rudin was pretty much exactly the asshole you thought he was. There were so many stories about Scott Rudin being abusive and violent that about halfway through the exposé, I realized The Hollywood Reporter could have clocked in a shorter word count had they just listed the items Scott hadn’t thrown around his office.
Naturally, one could have expected an industry-wide fallout, with people announcing they don’t put up with that kind of toxic abuse to staff, and that they’d immediately be ending their working relationships with Scott. That didn’t happen. And because it didn’t happen, Tony-winning Broadway star Karen Olivo has announced she’s quitting her role in Broadway’s Moulin Rouge!, in protest of the industry’s reaction to the allegations against Scott Rudin. Yes, a Karen is Karen-ing, but for a very good reason.

The good news for Scott is that this exposé will likely not lead to him going to prison like Harvey Weinstein.
