Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, And Billie Eilish’s Brother Were Nominated For A Whole Bunch Of Grammys Today

It’s that time of the year again! When people gather ’round the Grammy Awards official website, and either say the words “Oh good for them!” or “Who’s that?” or “WHERE’S BEYONCÉ?!?” at this year’s nominations. And there’s plenty to make you cheer for, question the validity of, or yes, wonder why Beyoncé wasn’t nominated for a single award. There’s a very good reason for that, and it’s simply that she didn’t put out any music that qualified for nominations (contrary to popular Beyhive belief, the Grammys don’t just throw nominations at Beyoncé simply for existing). But here’s who did gather up a few nominations at today’s Grammy nomination reveal!

When the 64th Grammy nominations were announced earlier today, there were a few notable moments of first-time nominees and history-making choices alongside the regular nominations. Kicking everything off is Oscar-winner Jon Batiste (aka the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), who was nominated for 11 awards. Olivia Rodrigo was nominated for the Big 4 awards, which are: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. Joining her in the Big 4 nominee club is FINNEAS, aka Billie Eilish’s brother and frequent collaborator, who is apparently a successful artist on his own now? Billboard points out that this is only the second time in history where there’s been two Big 4 nominees in the same year (the first time it happened was back in 2019, when Billie Eilish and Lizzo were both nominated for the Big 4 awards, with Billie winning all four).

Also worth noting, two follow-up albums to previous Album of the Year winners were nominated. Confusing yes, but it’s that Taylor Swift’s Evermore was nominated for Album of the Year after she won Album of the Year for her previous album Folklore, and Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever was nominated after she won the Album of the Year award for When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. This might not be an official record that was made today, but Lil Nas X successfully became the first artist to receive a Grammy nomination for giving Satan a lap dance! He was nominated for five awards, including the Big 3 (basically the Big 4 without Best New Artist), as well as Best Music Video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

And then there are the first-time nominees, like Selena Gomez receiving her first Grammy nomination ever, with Best Latin Pop Album, for her album Revelación. The Grammy’s finally managed to acknowledge some musical talent by giving ABBA their very first Grammy nomination, Album of the Year, for their album I Still Have Faith In You, which is what I said when I found out the Grammy’s finally nominated ABBA for a Grammy. The Weeknd got three Grammy nominations this year after getting zero last year and vowing to boycott the Grammys. via THR:

The artist is featured on Kanye West’s song “Hurricane,” which received a nom for best melodic rap performance when the nominees for the 64th Grammy Awards were announced on Tuesday. The singer is also a featured artist on two album of the year nominees, West’s Donda and Doja Cat’s Planet Her (Deluxe).

There is a bit of Beyoncé-adjacent Grammy news. Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z is now the most Grammy-nominated artist ever, with 83 Grammy nominations. That’s like a nomination for every time Jay-Z has spotted Kanye West at an event and nervously pretended he had to take an important phone call. Speaking of Kanye, he too collected a few nominations for his allegedly messy Donda album (four, including Album of the Year). And once that benefit concert is over, he and Drake can go back to hating on each other again, because they’re both competing for Best Rap Album. Well, it was nice while it lasted!
