Thankfully Steven Soderbergh and the other producers had the forethought and common sense to grab Oscar-winner Regina King and have her open the ceremony by walking. Yup, the camera followed Regina as she did a long strut to the stage while working a Judy Jetson pageant look, and when she got to the stage she mentioned the George Floyd verdict and the Oscars’ policy on masks.

As promised, the 2021 Academy Awards were not like the usual show, what with Steven Soderbergh giving you a high-budget Oscar fever dream sponsored by Expedia.com commercial realness from Union Station. But there was one custom that carried over from previous ceremonies, and that was the time-honored tradition of someone giving a really good acceptance speech. Lots of speeches were good, but then there was Minari’s Yuh-jung Youn, who alternated between gracious, humble winner and roastmaster general. She also got a little cute with Best Supporting Actress presenter Brad Pitt, both onstage and back in the press room after her award was presented.

One of the biggest head-scratchers (and there were A LOT) of last night’s Ambien Fest ’21 known as the 93rd Academy Awards was that they didn’t present Best Picture at the end of the show like they usually do. Best Picture, which was presented by Rita Moreno and won by Nomadland, was pushed before Best Actress and Best Actor. Some figured that the Academy thought the late Chadwick Boseman was going to win Best Actor, since his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has been sweeping this awards season, and so they wanted to end the show with a big tribute to him. BUT PLOT TWIST! When Joaquin Phoenix presented the Best Actor Oscar, he mumbled out something about acting being weird and then called out Anthony Hopkins’ name and Anthony Hopkins wasn’t even there. He was asleep at home! You and everyone else, Sir Tony!
