“Everything Everywhere All At Once” Leads The Nominations For The 2023 Critics Choice Awards
Choices, choices, choices! When did there get to be so many choices? Earlier this month at the People’s Choice Awards, the People had their say and chose Mariska Hargitay to get upstaged by Kathy Hilton and Olivia Wilde’s nipples. And now it’s time for the Critics to nominate their choices for future choosing at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards. And maybe because the Critics are canonically more critical than the People, they’ve chosen Everything Everywhere All at Once over Olivia’s nipples, which along with Don’t Worry Darling, were left out of the choices for future choosing altogether. Why, in my day, three white men with cigars in a secret Hollywood backroom made all the choices over the flayed body of a virgin sacrifice, but nowadays, it seems, everybody gets to choose!
The aforementioned EEAAO was the most popular choice among choosing choosers who chose with 14 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Comedy plus acting noms for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nods for the Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Also making the critics all googly-eyed was Steven Spielberg‘s The Fabelmans, co-written by Tony Kushner and starring White Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Judd Hirsch, and Gabriel LaBelle, all of whom were nominated. Other top choices with nine nominations each were Babylon and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin. Elvis and Tár earned seven nominations each. The CC nominations for television were previously announced. The Hollywood Reporter reports:
The Critics Choice Association previously announced that Abbott Elementary scored the most TV nominations with six. Better Caul Saul followed with five nods, while Gaslit, Reservation Dogs and The Good Fight tied with four nominations each.
Jeff Bridges will receive the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s show, which will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Jan. 15. Chelsea Handler is hosting this year.
