Dominic West Might Have Been Cast As Prince Charles In The 5th Season Of “The Crown”
The people behind The Crown have developed a pretty good reputation of casting each season really, really well. Not once have I finished an episode, and immediately began composing an email to Netflix, asking if their health plan covers eye exams, because every actor cast suits the role they were hired to play. How did they manage to perfectly nail the casting on not one, but two Dianas!? Well, look – not everyone can execute 100% accuracy at all times, which might explain why the role of Prince Charles in the 5th season is rumored to be played by the not-very-Charles-looking Dominic West.
This news comes from The Sun, which means that it’s still in the rumor stage, but Variety confirms that Dominic is in talks to play Prince Charles at the height of his marriage-killing affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles (who he later went on to marry). The 5th season will cover the time Charles was outed as a two-timer who couldn’t stay loyal to his wife. When this news first popped up, Michael was the first to make the joke that this alleged casting news was fitting, considering it’s a noted cheater playing a noted cheater. Maybe that’s what the producers were going for? Normally they try to match characters based on physical appearance, but Dominic’s ears and eyes tell me that maybe this time they were going for the overall essence.
The source tells The Sun that things are still allegedly in the in-talks stage. Also, everyone involved knows that the idea of Dominic playing Charles is just a little too timely.
“This will be a prestigious casting for Dominic. But the irony of it won’t be lost on anyone. Show bosses looked at several stars for the sought-after role, but he was by far their preferred actor. Now both parties are hammering out a deal.”
If this news is true, then 51-year-old Dominic will act opposite 30-year-old Elizabeth Debicki, who has been cast as The Crown’s next Princess Diana. That’s a bit of an age gap, but not that huge, considering there was twelve years between Charles and Diana. Here’s what they looked like, shortly before they called it quits.

Personally, I kind of saw this as a job for Matthew Rhys (if they want to go young) or Steve Coogan (if they want to go old). But I guess Dominic West is a skilled enough actor to pull off such a demanding role. And he is a good actor. Towards the end of their marriage, Charles and Diana looked – how you say – less than enthusiastic about being anywhere near each other’s asses. Meanwhile, that’s never been a problem for Dominic. He just showed us how well he can pretend to convince us that everything is fine in his marriage!
