Lady Gaga Says That Tony Bennett Hates How Martin Scorsese Portrays Italians In His Movies
The Hollywood Reporter says that Lady Gaga appeared with her House of Gucci co-stars, Adam Driver and Jared Leto, and director Ridley Scott, at a post-screening Q&A in Westwood last week. While there, Gaga obviously hammed it up and put in the work towards getting that Oscar for her work as a method-actress. She talked about how she got into the role, but she also mentioned someone else’s name, Tony Bennett. Tony and Gaga obviously hit the jazz music circuit hard as fuck and have a new album out called Love For Sale. Well, Gaga talked about Tony during that Q&A and said that he hates how Martin Scorsese portrays Italians in his movies.
In House of Gucci, Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, the wife of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) who went to prison for 18 years for having him assassinated. Gaga said that she read and watched all the interviews she could find of Patrizia but never went in person to meet her, which Patrizia was pissed about. Gaga explained she knew that Patrizia would lie to her, so she didn’t want to go:
“I tried to find mostly the facts only, things that weren’t colored by any thinking so that I could form an opinion of my own. What I found was that when I watched her in interviews, I started to pick up on the nuances of when she was telling the truth and when she was lying. I thought, well, if I’m with her in person, she most certainly will lie and I most certainly will be nervous, or not, and be unable to tell.”
“It was important to me that I became not only curious but fascinated and fixated on what happened to this woman that she would make such a terrible mistake and that all these men in this family would come together and that they would be fighting over the money, over the power and the balance of wealth in an Italian family… I can’t possibly understand why any woman would try to infiltrate an Italian family business. My father owns a restaurant, and I would never try to engage in anything about business with my father.”
Gaga talked about not wanting to play the role like a caricature (let me direct you to the trailer of wacky accents and broody 80s pop) as she wanted to honor Tony. You see, Tony apparently loathes how people like Martin Scorsese portray his native people as cheesy criminals:
“He famously talks about his distaste for Marty Scorsese’s films. How much he dislikes the way that Italians are portrayed in crime. Tony does not fully talk to me about this right now [because of] the state that he’s in [with Alzheimer’s], which is probably best for me, but I’ve tried to explain it to him.”
This might have been news to Martin, who back in August sent a special 95th birthday message to Tony which the Tony Bennett account posted:
What a day, and what a night! 95 feels great with the love from friends like Martin Scorsese. Thank you for this video.#happy95tony #igetakickoutofyou pic.twitter.com/8kzoxWM1B0

Um, did Gaga think that through?! Gaga needs to watch herself since she’s the one who wants Academy voters to give her a Best Actress Oscar and Martin probably knows a lot of them. Think quick, Gaga! Get Tony Bennett to join the internet in shit-talking Chris Pratt voicing Italian plumber Super Mario to distract everyone from this!
