“Blonde,” The Marilyn Monroe Biopic Starring Ana de Armas, Is Reportedly Too Sexual And Weird For Netflix

Blonde, the Marilyn Monroe biopic based on the fictionalized novel by Joyce Carol Oates, has been in the works for over 10 years. It was originally supposed to star Naomi Watts and then Jessica Chastain. Ana de Armas eventually got the role of Marilyn and filming started in 2019. Well, two years later and it’s still not out. Last year, Joyce Carol Oates praised Blonde’s director and screenwriter, Andrew Dominik, for creating a “brilliant” and “disturbing” movie after seeing a rough cut. World of Reel says that Netflix reportedly agrees that it’s “disturbing” and disagrees about it being “brilliant” so they pushed it back. What’s so disturbing about it? A talking fetus, period-blood oral sex, and graphic rape to name a few! Okay, so Netflix gives us trash like 365 Days but gasps at a talking fetus?!

There’s been talk that Blonde could be headed for Oscar, including one for Ana de Armas. It was supposed to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which starts in September. But Blonde was pulled from the competition lineup. It was supposed to come out this fall, just in time for Oscar season, but then Netflix pushed it into next year. WOR says that rumor has it there are issues between Andrew and Netflix over the final cut of the movie. Allegedly Netflix was shocked by the graphic sex and bizarreness of the movie even though it’s all in the script. The movie Andrew submitted is NC-17 territory and Netflix was “absolutely horrified” at the cut they saw, which included a graphic rape scene and some “bloody menstrual cunnilingus.” I mean, I appreciate so many people pushing the envelope on representations of pussy licking in media–but wow…

Some alleged script pages have leaked, so if you want to read the scene where Marilyn speaks to her fetus about abortion, here you go:

Netflix wants a new cut but Andrew is not interested. Netflix apparently thought this was going to be “an Oscar player,” but instead got a “vague, obtuse arthouse film.” The movie may now premiere at Sundance or the Berlin International Film Festival in 2022. Unclear if the vampire pussy munching will be included. Fingers crossed it is!

Well, it’s really cute that Blonde thought a talking fetus would be artsy and weird and shocking but, bitch, The CW’s Nancy Drew originated bizarre fetus representation when they had a witch pull a demon fetus from the earth. Think I’m kidding:

Look at that work! Not since American Sniper have we seen such realistic baby prop creation! So Blonde can sit down because they’re late to the fetus-speaking party.
