The Final Trailer For Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” Is Here
Has anybody checked on Jared Leto today? He might not be OK, he posted an unflattering photo of himself on Instagram, and I’m wondering if maybe it’s because the first full trailer for Todd Phillips‘ Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix just came out. The surrounding Oscar buzz may have taken the wind out of his sails/billowy Jesus caftan. This latest trailer actually shows us less about the movie than the teaser trailer that was released back in April. But don’t worry, I watched it with the closed captions on, and the descriptions of non-speech elements alone are enough to get the gist. This movie starts with (somber music), moves on to (child giggling), soon followed by (maniacal laughter) which, in turn, is followed by (Arthur Laughing), a distinction entirely lost on me as Arthur never (sweetly chuckles), then (dramatic music) crescendos into (bombastic music). In between there is a lot of smoking and a clown riot. Fin.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:
Todd Phillips directs the 1981-set film that centers on Arthur Fleck, a clown who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian. The film has drawn comparisons to Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, which starred Robert De Niro as an aspiring standup who idolizes a talk show host. In Joker, De Niro plays a talk show host and stand-up whom Arthur looks up to. Frances Conroy plays Arthur’s mother, while other stars include Deadpool 2‘s Zazie Beetz and GLOW‘s Marc Maron.
Not mentioned is Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry as The Brother Who Knows Something’s Up With This Creep, as we saw in the teaser trailer.
Joker will premiere at the Venice Film festival this weekend and open on October 4. Plenty of time for Jared to take care of his patchy beard situation and put on a brave face. It’s Joaquin’s turn to (ominous music) shine.
