Apollonia Came For Sheila E. On Facebook Over Her Prince Tribute Single “Lemon Cake”
Tomorrow marks the four year anniversary of Prince’s death. I’m pretty sure he’d be disappointed to know that the occasion is being marked by one of his former collaborators, Apollonia, publicly excoriating another former collaborator, Sheila E., on Facebook. I wonder which Prince GIF Prince would use to comment on Apollonia’s assertions that Sheila is a phony who’s desperately seeking relevancy by abusing her association with Prince now that he’s gone, despite the fact that he refused to talk to her the last five years of his life. There are so many to choose from!
FKA Twigs Wanted To Sing During The Prince Tribute At The Grammys, But They Didn’t Ask Her Ass
Jehovah’s Sexiest Witness became the Afterworld’s Sexiest Resident in April 2016, and at the next Grammys in 2017, they paid tribute to him with a performance from Bruno Mars and The Time. And at last night’s Grammy Awards, they paid tribute to him again, and while I think every Grammy Awards should have a Prince tribute, I wondered why exactly they were doing one. Turns out, it was an informercial to promote the Grammys tribute concert to Prince that will record tomorrow and air on CBS later this year. Usher is a part of the Grammys tribute concert, so he did the tribute last night, and I give that entire dull glitter mess of a performance 5 out of 5 Prince side-eyes:
And that bland tribute mostly got 5 side-eyes due to Sheila E getting pushed to the back, and FKA Twigs being used as a glorified Usher back-up dancer. And she claims it wasn’t her choice to not sing.
The Raw Emotions Poured Out Of Sheila E. During Her Prince Tribute Last Night
Approximately 35 milliseconds after Madge warbled out her tribute to Prince while dressed like Willy Wonka Goes To The Bordello at the Billboard Music Awards last month, BET released a shady tweet where they declared in so many words that their tribute to Prince would be better. They tweeted, “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t worry. We got you.” When they said, “We got you,” they must have meant that they were going to cover our eyeballs and fill our ear holes with so much Prince that we’d find ourselves shitting purple glitter afterward.
There were several Prince tributes during the BET Awards and everyone from Jennifer Hudson to Stevie Wonder to Janelle Monae to Erykah Badu to The Roots partook in one. You can watch all of the tributes here. But the biggest one came from one of Prince’s muses and collaborators Sheila E. While dressed like a member of a cult led by Mr. T, Sheila E. closed the BET Awards with a medley of The Purple One’s hits. Sheila E. drummed! Sheila E. danced! Sheila E. sang! And she did it all barefoot!
Sheila E. worked it so damn hard and sweat so much that I expected her to melt into a puddle on stage. I think I burned at least 1,000 calories just from watching her. Linda Perry Talks Prince Tribute, Calls Sheila E Irrelevant
It’s still dark times in the aftermath of the world losing its purple angel, Prince. In the words of Burt Bacharach, what the world needs now, is love. What the world doesn’t need is people slinging hateful words at the gems we have left! Prince’s long legacy gave us some of the most precious jewels of glamour, elegance and musical talent. One went up home earlier this year, before Prince, Vanity. But we’ve still got some left. Like Sheila E. Sheila can knock the hell out of the drums and can sing like no one’s business. But that’s not enough for some hateful hos. In this case, we’re talking about Linda Perry. Don’t mess with the Prince family, Linda. Just don’t.
