Open Post: Hosted By James Corden Doing “Top Gun” Flight Stunts With Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is a man of many talents: he acts, he does his own stunts, he manifest his own zits, he can go a decade without seeing his daughter, and he flies planes. Like, those fast Top Gun planes. Because Tom was in Top Gun. In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a new Top Gun movie out and Paramount Pictures is hell bent on reminding us that Tom Cruise is a totally unproblematic movie star badass. So, on last night’s episode of The Late Late Show, Tom took James Corden to Top Gun training school and flew him around in fighter jets. Obviously, the sexual tension was off the charts.

James introduced the clip back in the studio, and prefaced it by saying that the whole thing was “completely real” and he was “completely terrified.” In the clip, Tom picks James up early in the morning at Burbank Airport. He flies James to the desert in a private plane. There, he tells James that he’s going to fly him around in a vintage fighter plane, via Yahoo!:

“You’re not a pilot, you’re an actor,” a skeptical Corden pointed out. “With all due respect, you played a lawyer inĀ A Few Good Men, I wouldn’t want you to represent me in court, OK? I’m going to go up in a 75-year-old plane with somebody who is not a pilot,” asked Corden before he took off running in the opposite direction.

Eventually, Cruise got Corden strapped in, where he warned him that, should the engine catch fire, he would “get rid of the canopy, pitch the nose up 45 degrees and then go inverted” and ultimately “dump” Corden out of the airplane. Understandably, the late-night host was petrified.

Despite James’ fears, he went flying with Tom. After all, this is a bullshit late night comedy bit. After they landed safely, Tom tells James they’re going on a modern fighter jet the next morning. After some training, which included a sexy volleyball game, James was strapped into the fighter jet and entered the danger zone:

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Tom Cruise flight without Maverick going inverted, which he proceeded to do after telling Corden he would “just fly straight.”

“I love you and I hate you at the same time. That was absolutely outrageous,” said Corden.

Here’s the clip of James and Tom doing Top Gun shit:

Back in the studio, James claimed that 24 hours before they were supposed to film the segment, he emailed Tom and told him he was backing out due to cold feet. But Tom wouldn’t accept that. He called James and said, “It’s going to be OK. I would never do anything to put you in danger. And I promise you if you do this I think it will be a day you will never, ever forget.” Bitch, that’s exactly what David Miscavige told Shelly Miscavige before he offered to “show her around” his underground bunker.
