There Probably Won’t Actually Be A Trans Marvel Character In An Upcoming Movie

Scarlett Johansson can go ahead and tell her agent to keep her options open for the time being. Because when Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said there would be a transgender character in an upcoming Marvel movie, he wasn’t exactly telling the truth.

When Kevin recently appeared as a guest speaker at the New York Film Academy, he was asked tons of questions about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including questions about diversity. The laser level industry could use last decade’s MCU as a manufacturing standard, because it was pretty damn straight. Marvel finally got some LGBTQIA representation when it announced that The Eternals would feature their first main gay character. Kevin was asked about the possibility of a main trans character, and he answered:

“Yes, absolutely yes. And very soon. In a movie we’re shooting right now.”

Marvel is currently filming The Eternals, and it just wrapped filming on Black Widow, so that would kind of make it seem as though Marvel was about to make trans superhero history very soon. But two sources who spoke to Variety have appeared to crush those dreams. It sounded like Kevin’s answer was confirming the existence of a main trans character currently in production, but said sources say that Kevin’s answer wasn’t meant to address the question about a transgender character, but just LGBTQIA representation in general.

Variety’s sources say that the “very soon” part of Kevin’s answer was referring to the gay character in The Eternals, a gay dad played by Brian Tyree Henry. So there will be a trans character sometime, just not very soon. Which gives Disney plenty of time to ask Kevin if the director could somehow make it so that character could be obscured behind The Hulk’s muscles for certain audiences.

Now that we know Marvel doesn’t have a main trans character in an upcoming movie, I say DC should use this information to their advantage. There’s a transgender character in the Wonder Woman comic book series named Atlantiades. All it would take is a quick casting session, and a couple re-shoots for Wonder Woman 1984, and DC can claim the first main trans character in a superhero movie. Yes it might complicate the plot a bit, but it would still be less-confusing than Kristen Wiig as a villain.
