Jon Hamm Sorta Dissed Marvel Movies While Praising “Top Gun: Maverick”
Jon Hamm recently sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote that new Fletch movie, and he talked, nay, bragged about the success of Top Gun: Maverick. In case you haven’t seen it, Jon plays a by-the-book admiral who constantly tsk-tsks that ne’rer-do-well Tom Cruise. Last weekend, the movie set another box office record; it’s now the only film ever to have topped the U.S. box office on both Memorial Day and Labor Day. 51-year-old Jon told ET that its success is “unprecedented,” especially because “it doesn’t have somebody in a cape or on a spaceship.” He says Top Gun is “a story about real people.” Yeah, real people who fly through the skies like superheroes and spaceships.
via ET:
“It’s the only film to be number one on Memorial Day and number one on Labor Day,” Hamm shared proudly of the Tom Cruise starrer. “That’s unprecedented in many ways. It’s one of the only top five [films] that doesn’t have somebody in a cape or on a spaceship. It’s a story about real people, it’s got a lot of emotional resonance, people are really responding to it.”
“And it couldn’t have happened to a nicer movie,” he added, praising the film’s cast and creative team. “It’s so nice to see that happen to that younger generation of actors too, who really get to experience this and build on it and have their career blossom because of it.”
Clearly, Jon is referencing Marvel when he mentions guys in capes. Fair enough. But to talk about Top Gun: Maverick like it’s the little engine that could? No. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a sleeper hit, not your action sequel with a $170 million budget starring Tommy Cruise.
Top Gun has made $1.4 billion since opening in May. It’s the biggest Tom Cruise movie of all time and recently beat out Black Panther to become the fifth highest-grossing film in North American history. #4 is Avatar (spaceship), #3 is Spider-Man: No Way Home (somebody in a cape), #2 is Avengers: Endgame (somebody in a cape), and #1 is Star Wars: The Force Awakens (spaceship). Thank god Top Gun: Maverick is there to balance out this list with its “emotional resonance” (read: Miles Teller pouting about his daddy issues for 2 hours).
