“Top Gun: Maverick” Has Made $1 Billion Worldwide

After just 31 days in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick has passed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. That’s $521.7 million in America and $484.7 million from the international box office. According to Deadline, the new Top Gun is only the second movie of the “pandemic era” (blegh) to achieve this feat. The first was Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s also the first time any of Tom Cruise’s movies have hit the billion-dollar mark.  Let’s just hope he didn’t pay the film’s editor to slip in any subliminal messages about how awesome Scientology is, or we’re all fucked.

Deadline says Top Gun’s overseas holds have been “nothing short of stellar.” They credit Tom Cruise for much of the film’s success:

TGM’s performance is a testament to the work that Paramount’s distribution and marketing teams put behind it, while Cruise himself deserves massive credit. The indefatigable star traveled to San Diego, Mexico City, Japan, Cannes, London and Seoul to promote the movie. After his Korea trip, he even made a pit-stop at the CineEurope convention in Barcelona this past Wednesday (en route from Seoul to the set of the next Mission: Impossible), thanking exhibition personally for its efforts.

What’s even more impressive about the movie that puts Cruise back in the cockpit where he first catapulted to global action stardom, is that it is reaching these hypersonic heights without China or Russia in the mix. And, it is pulling in “older” audiences as well as the younger folk who weren’t even around for the first movie.

Top Gun: Maverick also managed to keep making big money despite the release of Jurassic World: Dominion on June 10. Deadline says this is good news for the film industry, because it proves “there is room in the marketplace for more than one major tentpole” in the years since coronavirus. But Top Gun: Maverick did lose the #1 spot at the domestic box office this weekend. It was barely beaten by Elvis. Here is how the top 5 looked, via Deadline:

  1. Elvis – $31.3 million
  2. Top Gun: Maverick – $29.6 million
  3. Jurassic World: Dominion – $26.7 million
  4. The Black Phone – $23.6 million
  5. Lightyear – $17.7 million

I hate Tom Cruise and Scientology with a fiery passion… and yet, I, too, went to see Top Gun: Maverick. It was fun. The planes went upside-down and did loop-de-loops. And I know Tom’s love interest was technically Jennifer Connelly, but he had waaay more chemistry with Miles Teller! And that’s not a joke, I mean that genuinely. I spent the whole movie shipping their forbidden, age-gap love. Alas…
