Trevor Noah Says Kanye West Should Be Counseled, Not Canceled

Last week Kanye West’s “concerning online behavior” got him canceled twice: Instagram suspended his account for 24 hours and the Grammys cut him as a performer. The Grammys is on April 3 and will be hosted by Trevor Noah. Last Tuesday on The Daily Show, Trevor said that he was worried that Kanye’s harassment of Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson could lead to violence. Kanye responded by going on Instagram, graciously thanking Trevor for his concern, and assuring him he would never hurt anyone. JK, Yeezy’s response was to call Trevor a racial slur. Before the post was deleted, Trevor left a very classy comment, writing that he was a huge fan of Kanye’s music, and “it breaks my heart to see you like this.” And yesterday he had more to say about the situation. Trevor tweeted, “I said counsel Kanye not cancel Kanye.”

Here’s Trevor’s tweet:

Trevor is referring to his comments on The Daily Show, when he discussed Kanye’s mental health and the “uncomfortable” music video in which a Claymation Kanye decapitates a Claymation Pete Davidson, via Us Weekly:

“What’s weird about the situation is Kanye West has told us that he struggles with his mental health,” the political commentator shared during an episode of the Comedy Central series. “So I get it, you wanna have art as therapy. But here’s what’s weird that Kanye doesn’t understand. It’s like, what we’re seeing is — it makes you uncomfortable.”

Noah continued: “With Kanye, we don’t know how to feel. We don’t know how to worry. I think Kanye doesn’t seem to understand that. He goes, ‘Leave me to create my art.’ Yeah but Kanye, you told us you have problems. Now when we worry about that, you say we shouldn’t worry because it’s not [his] problem. Or it is [his] problems? Which is it?”

He added, via Yahoo!:

“It touches on something that is more sensitive and more serious than people would like to admit,” Noah said. “I see a woman who wants to live her life without being harassed by an ex-boyfriend or an ex-husband or an ex-anything…You may not feel sorry for Kim because she’s rich and famous, but what she’s going through is terrifying to watch. And it shines a spotlight on what so many women go through when they choose to leave [toxic relationships].”

Noah added, “What we’re seeing here is one of the most powerful, one of the richest women in the world unable to get her ex to stop texting her, to stop chasing after her, to stop harassing her.”

So who wants to step up and be Kanye’s therapist? The pros: Kardashian gossip, wiiild anecdotes, and a glimpse into the mind of a musical genius. The cons: um, you have to spend 50 minutes a week with Kanye West. “Did you do your deep breathing exercises like we talked about, Kanye?” “HERE’S 55 REASONS PETE DAVIDSON SHOULD EXPLODE!!!!!”
