Nicolas Cage Talks About Being Married Five Times And He Thinks He Got It Right This Time
No matter how weird he gets, women keep marrying Nicolas Cage. His latest wife is 27-year-old Riko Shibata, who said “I do… want to eventually divorce you” to Nicolas last February. But Nicolas, 57, says Wife #5 Riko is a keeper. He tells The Los Angeles Times, “I know five is a lot, but I think I got it right this time.” Awww, bless your heart, you old five-timer, you!
The couple, who recently announced they’re expecting their first child together, met through mutual friends while Nicolas was shooting the movie Prisoners of Ghostland in Riko’s native Japan. After less than a year of dating, they got hitched in a small Vegas wedding. Nicolas talked about his marriage to Riko in an interview with The Los Angeles Times:
What else does Cage really care about these days? He’s earnest and thoughtful as he reels off a list of his favorite things. He starts the list with his wife, Riko Shibata. “I’m really happily married. I know five is a lot,” he says, a nod to the number of times he has wed, “but I think I got it right this time.”
Nicolas also mentioned that he loves his cat Merlin, whom he refers as his “best friend” (relatable), and his two sons, Weston Coppola Cage, 31, and Kal-El Coppola Cage, 17. He has two other animals, a cat named Teegra and a crow, Hoogan, who lives in a geodesic dome in his Vegas home. Nicolas doesn’t list those two pets on his “favorite things” list, but he says Teegra doesn’t give a shit if he’s second-place to Merlin. And Hoogan’s a douche who calls Nicolas names. Wait, crows can talk? And the first time I’m hearing about this is in an interview with Nic Cage?!
Nicolas has been married to 53-year-old Patricia Arquette (1995-2001), 53-year-old Lisa Marie Presley (2002-2004), 37-year-old Alice Kim (2004-2016), 38-year-old Erika Koike (for 96 hours in 2019-2019 [whoopsies!]), and now Riko. He had his oldest son with ex-girlfriend Christina Fulton, and the Superman-named one with Alice Kim.
It’s hard not to be cynical when someone gets four divorces (oops, three divorces, one annulment), and then they declare #5 to be “the One”. But who knows? Elizabeth Taylor’s #5 was Richard Burton (the first time), David Foster’s #5 was Katharine McPhee, and King Henry VIII’s #5 was Catherine Howard. Of all those couples, the only wife who was beheaded for allegedly sleeping with her cousin Catherine Howard. So maybe there is hope for Nic and Riko!
