Demi Lovato Is No Longer “California Sober,” They’re “Sober Sober”
Demi Lovato has gotten a lot of shit for saying they’re “California sober.” Demi’s personal interpretation of California sober was staying away from hard drugs like coke and heroin, but continuing to drink and smoke weed in moderation. It’s a controversial take, and many people (including Vanderpump Rules’ Lala Kent) don’t consider it sobriety at all. But now Demi has taken to their Instagram Stories to announce, “I no longer support my “California sober” ways. Sober sober is the only way to be.” Well, good for Demi. Hopefully, this announcement goes over better than previous very serious declarations like, “the word ‘aliens’ is derogatory towards UFOs“ and “I’m triggered by sugar-free cookies.”

And here’s what Demi originally said about being California sober in their docuseries, Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, which detailed their 2018 heroin overdose (via ET):
“I’ve learned that it doesn’t work for me to say that I’m never going to do this again,” Lovato said. “… I know I’m done with the stuff that’s going to kill me, right? Telling myself that I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana, I feel like that’s setting myself up for failure because I am such a black-and-white thinker. I had it drilled into my head for so many years that one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe.”
Around the same time Demi said this in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning:
“I think the term that I best identify with is California sober,” they said. “I really don’t feel comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people, because I don’t want anyone to look at my parameters of safety and think that’s what works for them, because it might not.”
Now that Demi’s sober-sober, will they continue to have alien UFO encounters? Or were their extraterrestrial experiences directly linked to smoking the good shit? And what about their mullet? And that bright green muppet coat in the header pic? Sorry, but that look can’t have been a “sober-sober” choice!
