Lala Kent Called Out Demi Lovato For Identifying As “California Sober”

Three years ago, Demi Lovato suffered a heroin overdose, which left Demi with the kind of lasting trauma that forced them to re-commit to a sober lifestyle. And Demi shared that they’d classify themselves as “California sober.” It may sound like a cute term, but not to Lala Kent, who has aggressively side-eyed Demi’s choice to be what Lala believes is sober-ish.

By Demi’s own definition, California sober means that Demi is staying away from harder drugs but will still “smoke weed and drink in moderation.” Demi didn’t create the term; it’s commonly used in recovery circles as a harm reduction strategy. However, it seems like Demi’s definition of California sober is a little off. Many believe that California sober only applies to weed, and that booze is still often a no-no. Well, whatever is or isn’t on the sobriety menu is of no interest to Vanderpump Rules’ Lala. Lala, who has had such a toxic relationship with booze that she once stuck her fiancé’s toothbrush up her ass during a fight, has been sober sober since 2018. She has revealed that she’s been in AA, and she’s committed to staying away from alcohol. Lala spoke about her sober journey and Demi’s sober journey during a recent episode of the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast. And needless to say, she isn’t feeling Demi’s process. via Page Six:

“I don’t like to judge, but I actually think that that’s super offensive. There are people out there who work their ass off to never take themselves out of reality and to never place themselves in an altered state.” Kent – who has been sober since October 2018 – added that there are people who won’t even take DayQuil or NyQuil when they have a cold. “So to say that you’re like California sober or this type of sober is extremely offensive,” the 30-year-old reality star remarked.

Not only is the term offensive to Lala, but according to her, it basically falls into the same category as Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or a mentally enriching episode of Vanderpump Rules. Aka – it’s not real!

Kent also declared that California sober is not a real thing. “I’ve been in rooms with men and women who have given up everything just to not pick up,” she said. “You’re not sober if you’re drinking or you’re smoking weed, you are not sober.”

The last time Demi felt personally attacked, a frozen yogurt shop had to take a break from Instagramming swirly cones to do several days worth of damage control. I wouldn’t be surprised if Demi was thinking of teaming up with another one of Lala’s famous enemies, 50 Cent, and began plotting how to take Lala down. If that’s Demi’s plan, maybe Demi should reconsider. 50 Cent is only going to make things worse. It will end with Demi having to once again address the mess with a public apology, like: “Lala, despite what others might have said over a series of deeply offensive Instagram Stories, I do not think you have such an opinion on being California sober because you’re a 100-proof California bitch...”
