Kathy Griffin Has Revealed She Has Lung Cancer

Kathy Griffin woke up this morning and announced some sadness. No, she hasn’t caught Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen waking her up at 2 a.m. with prank calls. She revealed that she has lung cancer, and will soon undergo surgery in response to it. But if there’s anything positive to note in this bummer news, it’s that Kathy says her doctors are hopeful and optimistic.

60-year-old Kathy made the announcement on Twitter this morning, with a simple note letting everyone know that she has cancer and that she’s about to go into surgery to have a whole half of her left lung removed. Should the surgery be successful, she won’t need chemotherapy or radiation. Also, Kathy came through with the sobering reminder that you can still get lung cancer even if you’ve never sucked back on a cigarette in your life.

It’s been a tough couple of years for Kathy, so lung cancer is truly the rotten pit-filled cherry on top of an expired freezer-burnt ice cream sundae. Four years ago, Kathy unleashed the D-list celebrity’s version of a career-killing pop culture Cthulhu on herself when she did a photoshoot with Tyler Shields featuring Kathy holding a fake head of Donald Trump, covered in extra-fake looking fake blood. Had that photo not gotten her into a ton of shit, I would probably have suggested she recreate that picture post-surgery with her holding up a very fake-looking rubber half-lung, with full “Fuck this cancer” vibes. But Kathy probably wants to leave the boundary-pushing photoshoots in the past, because that picture made the Secret Service pay Kathy a visit, caused Kathy to receive a mountain of death threats, saw her BFF Anderson Cooper drop her calls, and created so much drama she was allegedly blacklisted from Hollywood. She also got into some messiness with a neighbor, and her beloved mother Maggie Griffin passed away last year. Kathy’s crappy end-of-decade clip show of life did have one bright spot in it: she got married to Randy Bick in January 2020.

Kathy’s father and mother died of heart failure and dementia, respectively. But her two siblings Gary and Joyce both died from cancer. People magazine says that Kathy will talk about her cancer diagnosis during Monday night’s episode of ABC News’ Nightline. Apparently, Kathy wasn’t hanging on to this information for very long.

In a clip from the sit-down, she says she is “still a little bit in shock” after finding out the news a few weeks ago.

“Really just days ago – like, I think two weeks ago – I was diagnosed with cancer. As a friend of mine had said, ‘How many kicks in the nuts can you take?’ My nuts are pretty strong, but it’s a challenge,” she says. “I was definitely in shock. I’m still a little bit in shock – not denial, but once a day I’ll just turn to like, nobody next to me and go, ‘Can you believe this shit? Is this a bitch or what?'”

Prayers up for Kathy, if you’re a praying type of person. Or start thinking some good thoughts if that’s more your style. And if you’re Kathy’s longtime comedy rival Ellen DeGeneres, then go ahead and use some of your millions to send Kathy a post-surgery gift basket filled with easily digestible foods and comfy pillows. It’s the least you can do, Ellen!
