Niecy Nash Says Her Marriage To Jessica Betts Wasn’t A “Coming Out”, It Was A “Going Into Myself”

Last week Niecy Nash blessed this godforsaken hellscape we call Planet Earth with the happy news of her surprise wedding to singer-songwriter Jessica Betts. 50-year-old Niecy’s two previous marriages were to men, and her latest divorce was only finalized a few months ago, so her getting married to a woman was a self-described #plottwist. But don’t call it a come out. According to Niecy, marrying 41-year-old Jessica, AKA “Betts”, “has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul.” Niecy described her new wife “as the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life.” 

She goes on to say that she doesn’t see this as coming out of the closet, via People:

“I don’t feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere, but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love,” she shares. “And I’m not limiting myself on what that love is supposed to look like.”

And Niecy says she wasn’t suppressing her sexuality her entire life:

“I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I’ve done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I’ve always been. It’s a matter of who I am in this moment.”

Niecy and Jessica connected on social media in 2015 and Jessica was in the 2018 Claws episode where Niecy’s character gets married. They were friends, but Niecy says she never saw her as someone she would date. Then after she and ex Jay Tucker split last fall, something shifted between them:

“We began to see each other in a way we never had before. Sometimes you get so broken by love, you run from it. But I’ve learned that you should always hold space for magic because it can happen at any time.”

Oh god, “Hold Space For Magic” sounds like a dumbass tattoo I’ll probably get one night when I’m wasted. Oopsies!

According to People, the surprise wedding was at their home in their Ventura County, California. The “rustic chic affair” was attended by 24 close friends and family members, who were given personal bottles of hand sanitizer and wore custom face masks that said #LoveWins (ruh roh, another stupid tattoo possibility).
