At the end of last year, we learned that Emma Stone was pulling a Scarlett Johansson (no, not like that – she learned her lesson), and was engaged to her boyfriend Dave McCary, a writer on Saturday Night Live. Then in March, we learned that they postponed their wedding because of the coronavirus lockdown. Because it’s not fun to do the Cha-Cha Slide while the DJ is saying, “Slide no more than six feet to the left, clap your hands but don’t touch your face.” But while some people are waiting until things go back to relative normalcy before they re-send out their save the dates, Emma and Dave might have gotten impatient and just did the whole thing in quarantine secret.
31-year-old Emma is a private-ish person who doesn’t do social media, and the last time 34-year-old Dave posted on Instagram was five months ago when he announced that they got engaged. So all we have to go on is what ELLE magazine thinks are a few subtle clues dropped by Emma, either on purpose or by accident, while appearing on Reese Witherspoon’s YouTube show Shine On with Reese at Home last week. Emma spoke with Reese about anxiety in children (Emma was diagnosed with an anxiety and panic disorder at 7 years old).
The first clue was the fact that Emma (while looking like Blythe’s cousin in this screengrab) appeared to be wearing what looks like a wedding band on her left hand, which doesn’t look like her pearl and diamond engagement ring.
Later in the interview, Reese and Emma spoke with Dr. Harold Koplewicz, a child mental health expert who has worked with Emma before. Dr. Koplewicz once told Emma that if she were to marry an anxious man, she would need to know Dr. Koplewicz for the rest of her life. Emma laughed and responded:
“Thankfully I didn’t do that.”
Some took that to mean that Emma already married Dave.
One Twitter user pointed out that Emma might have accidentally showed off her possible wedding band at the end of April when she appeared in an Instagram Live video to raise money for charity.

Big thank you to @childmindinstitute board member Emma Stone, and @ryan.heffington for taking over the our Instagram Live this afternoon with #SWEATFEST. They're helping raise funds to enable us to support groups, provide telehealth and create online resources for children and their families, who need extra support during COVID-19. Watch the full #danceparty by tapping on IGTV in our bio and join Ryan tomorrow for another #sweatfest in support of @childmindinstitute.
So basically, there are two explanations for what is going on here. Either Emma has temporarily replaced her fancy engagement ring with a simple placeholder because we’re all stuck inside in our sweatpants and therefore why bother dressing up, or she got secret married. My money is on the second option, since we know it’s possible to hold a Zoom wedding from the comfort of your own home. And of course, they’re rich, so they can definitely afford to throw a big, huge wedding-style party once we’re all allowed to leave our homes again. But just so there’s no confusion, maybe Emma’s possible new husband could slyly confirm the news by following in the footsteps of the accidental lockdown video star of Spain, and walk by her next video holding a valid marriage certificate. Whether or not he does so without any pants on his choice, but I’m sure none of us at home would complain.
