Charli XCX Would Like To Clarify The Shit She Said About Taylor Swift’s Reputation Tour
If you know anything about Taylor Swift then you know that she can hold a grudge and that her fans will attack you with a flood of hatred and rats when called upon–consciously or not. The good thing about Tay Tay is her grudges manifest so much energy within her that she can only maintain a couple at a time. The bad news is, now that Katy Perry and Taylor have buried the hatchet, Tay’s got an opening for a new rival. Charli XCX knows this–she went on her Reputation Tour with her. And so now Charli needs to make sure that Taylor knows just how grateful she really is and that she didn’t mean it when she said performing on the tour was like “waving at 5-year-olds.” I mean, true, median age at a Taylor Swift concert is probably at least seven.
Pitchfork is the original sin in this case; Charli’s interview with them is where she made the ghastly error in judgment of speaking about Taylor Swift in any way other than endlessly glowing and positive. Rookie mistake. While speaking with Pitchfork, Charli got into the nitty-gritty of her career and all the “art” of it and how she’s sort of mainstream but not–and in the process she made this, probably she thought, nonchalant remark:
“I’m really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour,” Charli says. “But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.”
The performances served a purpose, though: It made Charli decide to never open for anyone again. “I’ve done so much of it, and it really cemented my status as this underdog character, which I like now,” she says. “But I need to just own my own fucking shit finally.”
Since Charli was probably already getting death threats in her inbox and dead rats left on her doorstep by Taylor’s cat army, she hurried to clarify the comments. She wasn’t going to end up on the Scooter Braun-end of Taylor Swift–not today.
Charli hopped on Twitter to assure everyone that she loved Taylor and she loved the tour and no it was not so bad performing ho-anthems in front of young children several times in a row that Charli had to quit opening for other people–this is just a misunderstanding. Here’s her Twitter excuse:

See? Charli wasn’t being shady, she was just used to performing at 18+ locations and so when she got to the main stage at the Gymboree it took some getting used to. I mean, I agree with Charli here: we all could learn and grow from working a few shifts at the Gymboree. Artistic and personal growth come from all kinds of places, including babysitting.
