Taylor Swift Is Involved In A Very Messy Fight With Justin Bieber’s Manager Scooter Braun Over Her Music

July 1, 2019 / Posted by:

Taylor Swift’s latest reinvention has been one big rainbow-wrapped celebration of gay rights and former enemy forgiveness. And usually Taylor remains fully committed to whatever personality she and her team have settled on. But recently Taylor learned that almost her entire album catalog has been sold off to Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun. Taylor is most likely storming around as Pissed-Off Taylor from the Reputation era, because Taylor is fucking livid that Scooter Braun owns most of her music now.

On Sunday it was reported by Billboard that Scooter Braun is buying the record label Big Machine for $300 million from its founder Scott Borchetta. Big Machine, started in 2005 and based in Nashville, specializes in country and pop artists. Taylor Swift was one of the first artists signed (in 2005), and was arguably the biggest name on their roster at one point in time. She has released six albums with Big Machine: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation. Her upcoming album, Lover, will be released on her new label, Universal’s Republic Records. Taylor Swift’s father Scott Swift reportedly owned 3% of Big Machine.

Big Machine owns all of Taylor’s breakup songs and musical clap-backs to her haters and all that. Sorry, they did own them. Now Scooter Braun owns them, which is something Taylor does not like. Taylor posted a lengthy post to Tumblr explaining her feelings on the matter. I’ve joked before that everything Taylor does is her version of the Mean Girls Burn Book, but Tumblr is her real Burn Book. Taylor began by posting a screen grab originally posted by Justin Bieber to Instagram back in 2016 featuring Justin FaceTiming with Scooter Braun, and one of his clients Kanye West. This was at the height of the Taylor vs. Kanye feud.

She writes that she found out about the Big Machine deal at the same time everyone else did. She continues that she’s been bullied by Scooter for years, that she’s never had a nice thing to say about him, and that Scott Borchetta knew all this and still sold her life’s work to her enemy anyway. Taylor calls the situation her “worst case scenario.

For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

Sad and grossed out,
Taylor

So Taylor proved she’s still able to comfortably fall back into that ol’ victim mentality. Meanwhile, born-again Christian Justin Bieber proved he’s still got 100-proof douchebag loyalty running through his skinny little veins. Because TMZ says that Justin Bieber jumped to the defense of his unlicensed Big Brother in the pettiest of ways. To be fair, he did begin his Instagram post with an apology for acting like a little shit back in 2016 and trolling Taylor with a picture of that FaceTime call. He added that Scooter had nothing to do with it, and claimed Scooter had always had Taylor’s back. But then Justin follows that up by swatting at Taylor for dragging Scooter on a public forum like Tumblr instead of calling him up and talking in private.

Hey Taylor. First of all i would like to apologize for posting that hurtful instagram post, at the time i thought it was funny but looking back it was distasteful and insensitive.. I have to be honest though it was my caption and post that I screenshoted of scooter and Kanye that said “taylor swift what up” he didnt have anything to do with it and it wasnt even a part of the conversation in all actuality he was the person who told me not to joke like that.. Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you.! As the years have passed we haven’t crossed paths and gotten to communicate our differences, hurts or frustrations. So for you to take it to social media and get people to hate on scooter isn’t fair. What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter. Anyway, One thing i know is both scooter and i love you. I feel like the only way to resolve conflict is through communication. So banter back and fourth online i dont believe solves anything. I’m sure Scooter and i would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain or or any feelings that need to be addressed. Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you. I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone i loves character thats crossing a line..

Justin’s wife Hailey Baldwin Bieber decided to get some attention by commenting the following on Justin’s post:

That comment brought former squad member Cara Delevingne out of friendship retirement to defend Taylor. Teen Vogue says Cara responded to Hailey by writing:

“Gentleman? @haileybieber @justinbieber you must be bored. I wish you spent less time sticking up for men and more time trying to understand women and respecting their valid reactions. As a married man, you should be lifting women up instead of tearing them down because you are threatened. I am not sure you actually understand what an apology is. This issue that @taylorswift is talking out is about far more than a picture and you know that. As you said, you haven’t spoken to her in years which means you definitely don’t understand the situation. I do. Take a step back and try and learn from this. We should all be on the same team. End of story.”

Cara also screen-grabbed her comment and posted it to her Instagram stories, writing, “Love you @taylorswift.

Scooter hasn’t directly addressed Taylor’s complaints, but his wife Yael Cohen did. Yael went off on Taylor, accusing her of being the bully, and implying she’s a liar by claiming she totally knew about the $300 million buy-out decision before she let on she did.

@taylorswift, I’m here to talk privately anytime.

Yael ends by calling Taylor’s comments a “temper tantrum.” Oh honey, you have no idea. Temper tantrums set to piano and guitar have paid for Taylor’s many Chateaus du Chats. Add to that Taylor’s ability to lock on to a grudge like her knuckles were replaced with Vise-Grips. What I’m trying to say here is, no one should be surprised when Taylor releases an entire album’s worth of songs dedicated to sad and gross Scooter Braun. And I know she can fill an entire album – just think about how many juvenile shady words rhyme with Scooter. Tooter. Pooter. Rude-er. Doo-dooer. Oh Scooter, you’re in for it now.
