John Cena Reportedly Didn’t Really Ever Want To Get Married In The First Place

There was a time when it used to mean something if you dropped down on one knee in a pair of spandex undies in front of screaming, drunk fans and proposed to your girlfriend at WrestleMania. But apparently John Cena’s engagement to Nikki Bella was doomed from the start, because he wasn’t the marrying type to begin with.

A source tells People that after John got divorced from his first wife Elizabeth Huberdeau in 2012, he was adamant that was his last marriage. John was also very against having kids. So when John proposed to Nikki, she took it as a sign that he might also be open to putting a baby in her.

“When [Cena] proposed, he convinced [Bella] that he was a changed man. And if he can change his mind about never wanting to get married, why wouldn’t he change his mind about not wanting kids? John acted more and more like he was doing her a favor by somehow conceding to go ahead and marry her. Nikki doesn’t need a pity proposal, a pity wedding, a pity husband. She’s a phenomenal, tremendous woman.”

According to another source, Nikki is “heartbroken” over the split, which was initiated by John getting a case of cold feet before the wedding. She also feels a little tricked by the ring she received in the ring.

“He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been – which is someone who puts himself first, always. But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken.”

The source goes on to say that when Nikki claimed she didn’t want children, everyone around her knew that was her way of convincing herself that the relationship was right. The conversation about marriage and kids came up a lot on E!’s Total Divas and Total Bellas. Back in 2014, Nikki’s twin sister Brie Bella called John out over her sister’s sudden acceptance over not getting married or having kids. To which John Cena responded:

“I was abundantly clear about that from our very first date. It wasn’t like I tried to manipulate your sister into thinking a certain thing was going to happen and then all the sudden say ‘Ha ha.’ I love this girl, but I love my life.”

John and Nikki were supposed to get married on May 5th. It’s pretty clear this wedding was called off at the last minute because someone really didn’t want to get married and someone realized they really wanted to have kids. Maybe John didn’t want to say “I do,” but I refuse to believe that John Cena wasn’t dying to see if he could flex the muscles in his hand hard enough to break Nikki’s wedding band while putting it on her finger.
