Open Post: Hosted By Katie Holmes’ Y2K Look

It’s happening. My nightmare is coming true: the 2000s fashion craze is taking hold. A combination of Gen Z-ers stumbling upon reruns of The OC and fashion houses running out of ideas has led to this outcome. And one of the worst trends of the period has made its debut on the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball red carpet. Katie Holmes unabashedly rocked up to the event in the dreaded dress-over-jeans outfit. Maybe the Y2K glitch did actually happen in 2000 and sent us back in time because we’re definitely in the dark ages. Katie Holmes bringing back this Y2K awfulness makes sense since, during the aughts, she brought back the tight-rolled jeans of the 90s!

The last time we heard from Katie Holmes, she was debuting her new man, Bobby Wooten III, on the pap stroll. And now she’s gotten a little attention for bringing back some old shit on the red carpet. But Vogue seems into the style:

If anything, Holmes’s take on the dress-over-denim look reminded me of her first flush of fame as Joey on Dawson’s Creek. Joey’s love of dungarees, tank tops, and fisherman-style sweaters are all well-documented (and in the age of TikTok, probably overdue a revival) so to see Holmes lean into her Y2K style origins feels strangely charming. As long as a fully-fledged revival of frayed denim doesn’t happen? I’m down for Katie bringing it all the way back—and may the skirt-over-pant trend continue.

Meanwhile, internet users are either questioning what year it is or are against doing this look all over again:

It’s definitely a choice by Katie. Apart from bringing back terrible memories of a fashion era that should never have been, I have questions about the bottom half of the outfit. Is New Balance cool now? Am I going to have to fray my jeans? I’m already struggling to look put together, so maybe I can just say I’m a trendsetter like Katie and pretend I’m fashionable!
