Open Post: Hosted By The $30,000 “Butt Rig” Used In A Salad Tossing Scene That Was Cut From “Bros”

Bros, the gay rom-com starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, opened last week in theaters and immediately flopped. Billy put the blame on straight people not hitting the theaters to see it. Others put the blame on how only superhero movies, horror movies, and movies with big names make money at the box office. But apparently, this film also made history by using a $30,000 device to simulate the joys of tickling ass with your tongue. Not that it matters now, because the scene was ultimately cut after The White Lotus hit it first.

According to Variety Bros has a variety of sex scenes to choose from, but one was cut entirely. During a scene between Billy’s character Bobby and his love interest Aaron, played by Luke McFarlane, there’s a bit of butt play taking place that was helped with the $30,000 rig Luke once defined as “a very expensive prop.” And yes, I also initially read that line as a “very expensive top” which would have turned Bros’ R rating straight into XXX. Now THAT’S the movie I want to see.

The “$30,000 butt rig” was used during an extended sex scene between Aaron (Macfarlane) and Bobby (Eichner) in which the characters passionately embrace each other’s sexual quirks. Macfarlane said “two puppeteers” operated the butt rig off camera.

Had I known there would be puppeteering and pricey sex toys I would have been first in line. And although Billy cut the scene because White Lotus did it first, he still sees the value in showcasing the joys of sex in his film.

“Sex can be funny, awkward, silly, and absurd, but also romantic and sweet, but it also serves the story, because the sex that these guys have, it evolves over the course of the movie as their relationship becomes more intimate and vulnerable,” Eichner said. “Both of these guys are trying so hard to be strong at the beginning of the movie, and I say at the end the movie that I’m sick of being angry and I’m sick of being strong, and we watch that story unfold — sex is part of that.”

See, Billy should have led with that! Bros, the movie about awkward sex. Because no matter your orientation, we all have experience with that.
