Frankie Goes To Hollywood: The Video Game!

We don’t need further proof that the 80s was a golden era in fuckery, but here’s more proof anyway. In 1983, Liverpool’s own Frankie Goes To Hollywood became a household name after their single, the gay butt sex anthem Relax, became a global hit (and was also banned by the BBC for being too raunchy, as if there’s a thing as “too raunchy”), and their follow-up singles, Two Tribes and The Power of Love, were also hits. And Frankie Goes To Hollywood wasted no time in becoming Frankie Goes To THE BANK because they struck while the money-making iron was hot and had a line of Frankie Say! t-shirts, made an appearance as themselves in Brian De Palma’s Body Double, and put out a damn video game in 1985.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood wasn’t the only music act with a video game in the 80s. Journey’s Atari 2600 game came out in 1981, but the Frankie Goes To Hollywood video game, which took place in Liverpool, had INTRIGUE, STORY, MURDER, and several heapings of WTF. It was available for Commodore 64 and other home computers. Den of Geek did an article about the game in 2015, and they said that the game had two goals. One of the goals was to become a full person so you could enter the Pleasuredome (Welcome to the Pleasuredome was the name of the band’s debut album) and the other goal was to solve a murder. So it was like equal parts Clue and a cult initiation. This is how Wikipedia explains the goals of that mess of a game:

The player has to find and use various objects and play minigames to reach the goal. The player starts the game as a simple character, to reach the Pleasuredome one has to become a full person. To become a full person, the four attributes (sex, war, love and faith) must be filled to 99%. The attributes are boosted by completing tasks in the game. Additional pleasure points can be scored by playing the minigames. The four attributes are part of the symbols used on the covers of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s albums.

During the game, a murder takes place. All the rooms the player can visit contain clues in order to find the murderer. The clues are in pairs, helping eliminate suspects. For example, the player may be told “The killer is an atheist” and “Mr Somebody is a regular church-goer” – so Mr Somebody would be innocent. In theory, the game cannot be completed without making the correct accusation (by returning to the room with the body) – there is a large bonus of Pleasure Points for naming the killer.

Here’s a YT video where a player becomes a full person and wins the game by entering the Pleasuredome:

That looks weird enough to be good, but honestly, I would’ve rather had a Relax video game where two gay dudes go searching for poppers, douche, and lube, and once they find ’em all, they get the ultimate prize: butt sex. Frankie say YES to that.
