Laverne Cox Doesn’t Regret Bringing Up “Entanglements” To Jada Pinkett Smith And Will Smith

On Sunday night, Will Smith inched his way just a little closer to the possibility of his first Oscar win when he took home the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for King Richard. But on Sunday, he was also reminded of the time he took home the Red Table Talk award for Most Meme-able Face when his wife Jada Pinkett Smith admitted to an “entanglement” with their son’s friend August Alsina. That reminder came courtesy of E! red carpet correspondent Laverne Cox, who brought up the entanglement situation in a light way. But still, a whole lot of people thought it was beyond tacky for her to utter the E word to the Pinkett Smiths. Laverne has something to say about her red carpet choice, and she truly isn’t bothered by the hate it received.

Laverne’s interaction with Will and Jada was on the mild side, and it looked like everybody had a good laugh when Laverne brought up that moment from Red Table Talk. via Insider:

At the awards ceremony on Sunday, Cox, who was a red carpet correspondent for E! News, told Pinkett Smith that fans couldn’t wait for more “Red Table Talk,” and “more entanglements,” using the vernacular that Pinkett Smith had previously used to describe her 2015 extramarital relationship with August Alsina on her show.

Smith and Pinkett Smith laughed at the remark, and Pinkett Smith replied, “No more of those.”

Here’s the moment:

It looks like Will and Jada were kind of cool with it, but the internet was not.  People sprang into action and dragged Laverne on Twitter, calling her a multitude of things ranging from inappropriate to unprofessional, which feels like a reach, considering she was doing the lightest of work for E!, and not conducting a formal interview for the Peabody Awards or something. But an over-reaching theme from the haters was that Laverne was being “disrespectful” to the couple. Those who were hoping that the next thing out of Laverne’s disrespectful, tacky mouth was a sincere apology are going to have to keep waiting. Because it’s not going to happen!

Laverne hopped on an Instagram Live and said that she’ll always hold herself accountable for her actions, but that she really doesn’t have much to be held accountable for here. She says she loved Red Table Talk, and that she wanted to talk to Willa and Jada about so much more, but that it was likely a producer was in her ear telling her to wrap it up, and that would be why the “entanglement” topic was kind of flippantly thrown in towards the end of their conversation. She adds that she’s not apologizing to random people on the internet about it. But, if Will and Jada wanted a personal apology, she would gladly deliver one privately to them. Neither Will nor Jada have spoken out about getting their feelings hurt by Laverne, so it’s looking like she doesn’t need to start writing that apology yet.

Anyone with the criticism that the red carpet has gotten a little boring in recent years was surely pleased when Laverne oh so casually brought up what is arguably the messiest moment from Red Table Talk. She really went there in a way that likely had the ghost of Joan Rivers nodding in approval. Although I also feel like Joan would be cursing her out for not asking Jada why she decided to come dressed looking like the high priestess of an interplanetary space cult.
