Ridley Scott Defends “House Of Gucci” After The Gucci Family Slammed It

The Gucci Family has not been down with House of Gucci since they saw the first on-set pictures featuring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. But what really stuck in their craw was Al Pacino who plays Aldo Gucci. Patrizia Gucci (the granddaughter of Aldo Gucci and daughter of Paolo Gucci who is played by Jared Leto in the movie) said that her grandfather was very tall, blue eyes, elegant” while Al Pacino’s version of him is “fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly.” Is she saying short, fat people can’t be elegant? Is Jillian Michaels part of the Gucci family? Now that the movie is out, the Guccis are still pissed and they put out a statement dragging the movie calling it an “insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”

The Gucci family, who is no longer involved in the Gucci brand, gave a statement that was originally published by the Italian news agency SANSA. They slam the filmmakers for not consulting them and for rewriting history when it comes to Patrizia Reggiani (played by Gaga) putting out a hit on her husband Maurizio Gucci (played by Adam Driver). While Tom Ford laughed while watching it, the Gucci family did not. via Variety:

“The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci–president of the company for 30 years–and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them, attributing to the protagonists, events, a tone and an attitude that never belonged to them. This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”

It added that the pic attributes “a tone and and an attitude to the protagonists of the well-known events that never belonged to them.”

“This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today,” it noted.

House of Gucci director Ridley Scott was interviewed on the Total Film podcast and told them about how the Gucci family can eat shit. Not in those words, but he got close to it. He defended Al and also stood up for Jared Leto‘s method acting because Patrizia Gucci had said Jared’s “unkempt hair, and lilac corduroy suit” were “horrible, horrible… I still feel offended.” Ridley was not having it and called the Guccis’ criticism, “alarmingly insulting.” via IndieWire:

“The people that were writing from the family to us at the onset were alarmingly insulting, saying that Al Pacino did not represent physically Aldo Gucci in any shape or form,” Scott said. “And yet, frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world, you should be so fucking lucky.”

“…I think a lot of it is comedic,” Scott told Total Film about Leto’s performance. “Certainly for the first two acts. Jared Leto, there’s not a lot of information about [his character] Paolo, but there are pictures of Paolo and that’s exactly what Paolo looks like. We found the pictures and Jared did what he did and dressed the way Paolo dressed. There’s not a lot of Paolo on camera talking. And so that had to be, to a certain extent, imagined, but clearly Paolo was a very colorful and flamboyant man… The flamboyance of Paolo was quite nicely captured,” Scott added. “And how could that be offensive? We paid attention to not getting too overt if we can avoid it.”

The Gucci family should watch themselves. So far they’ve kept Gaga’s name mostly out of their mouths and have focused on Al and Jared, but if they even think about slamming Gaga’s Russian Italian accent they will feel the wrath of the Little Monsters just like the movie reviewers already have!
