Gillian Anderson Doesn’t Care What Alec Baldwin Thinks Of Her Accent
Last week Alec Baldwin, blowhard patriarch of the Baldwinito child army (now six-strong!), quit Twitter for the third time after receiving backlash for tweeting a CNN article about Gillian Anderson’s British and American accents. He wrote, “Switching accents? That sounds…fascinating,” obviously making a comparison to his esposa Americana Hilaria Baldwin. Alec announced his Twitter departure in a 10-minute-long Instagram video rant, being sure to mention he was a big Gillian fan, and his tweet was actually very high-brow “irony” that went over the heads of all us plebs. Now it’s Gillian’s turn to address the accent controversy, and her official statement is basically, “I don’t give two shits.” Equal parts unsurprising and inspiring.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gillian addressed the initial hullaballoo about accepting her Golden Globe for The Crown with an American accent:
“I don’t have social media on my phone so I wasn’t [aware]. A couple people texted to say that something was going on,” she shared. “I didn’t pay any attention to it because it’s just something that I live.”
“I grew up between two countries and so depending on who is in my ear is which direction my accent goes,” she explained. “So I’m so used to it that it’s kind of old news for me.”
Gillian mentioned she’s met Alec before, and when the interviewer asked her if Alec has reached out since last week, Gillian replied:
“I haven’t heard from him. It doesn’t matter. It’s so not a newsworthy item, but I’m sad that it’s caused him so much distress.”
Here’s the video of the interview. The accent talk starts around the 5:43 mark:
Even though Gillian says she’s “sad” about Alec’s distress, she appears completely unbothered in that clip. If anything, mildly amused. See, that’s the way to be a celebrity! Knowing that you’re so hot, so famous, so fucking rich, that you simply don’t have to pay attention to any of this bottom-of-the-barrel bullshit. Take notes, Alec and Eelahria!
