Sam Smith Got Kicked Off A Dating App For Looking Too Much Like Sam Smith

Since I have a great respect for both my time and my ears, I don’t listen to Sam Smith. But it’s mostly because the only thing I think of when I see their face is the time they won an Oscar for singing some James Bond theme song, hopped up onto the stage, and proclaimed to be the first gay person to win the award (despite that being so unbelievably not true). So, needless to say, when Sam Smith makes a proclamation that doesn’t come with a CVS-length roll of receipts, I tend to be a little skeptical. But anyway…Sam says that they recently got kicked off of a dating app––and not for allegedly fat-shaming his matches or making sweeping statements about how much Michael Jackson sucks. This reason was much more believable.

Like many of us in quarantine, Sam has been turning to the apps for some stimulating conversation. And since we all know how Sam feels about Grindr, they’ve apparently taken a less direct approach and signed up for the mild-mannered dating app Hinge. Well, this was Sam’s first mistake, according to, of all people, Andy Cohen.

According to People, while on a recent virtual visit to Watch What Happens Live (my GOD! A conversation between Andy Cohen and Sam Smith? Who watched this? And, also, who hurt you?), Sam confessed to Andy to having been kicked off the platform for, apparently, looking too much like themselves:

“I took your advice and I joined this dating site called Hinge in the U.K. and they chucked me off of it after one night cause they thought I was a catfish pretending to be me.”

To which Andy replied:

“That same thing has happened to me on dating apps but that’s why I wanted you to join Tinder because I have someone who can get you on there and verify you,”

Because OF COURSE, Andy knows someone at Tinder with “verification” powers. But this suggestion apparently didn’t faze Sam in the least, who proceeded to attempt to draw more sympathy for continuing to be a solo flyer:

“I’m still single. I’m on the frontline with all the single people still and it’s been difficult … I’ve gone on all the apps and stuff.”

(Leave it to Sam to use the term “frontline” during a pandemic to refer to themselves and all of the other sad, single people).

Andy’s attempt to further pimp out Tindr was met with more backlash when Joey King, who was the episode’s other guest, shared her own catfishing story.

“By the way though, someone has used my face and photos as catfish for Tinder,” the 21-year-old actress said. “A friend of mine who was on Tinder sent me a screenshot of someone who was using my pictures.”

Wow! Come through, Joey! Ruining Andy’s part-time gig as a dating app ambassador.

Well apparently, some underling at Hinge with nothing better to do but watch this WWHL episode brought it to someone’s attention because, according to the Hinge Twitter account, Sam will now, thankfully, be verified ASAP.

Join me in celebrating the good news that sad, single Sam Smith can once again cruise from the comfort of their own home.
