Mary-Kate Olsen Has Finally Been Able To File For Divorce

Mary-Kate Olsen really wanted to end her 5-year marriage to Olivier Sarkozy back in April, but due to the COVID-19 lockdown, she wasn’t allowed to file for divorce. A few weeks ago, she filed an emergency petition, saying she needed to file ASAP because things had gotten messy. A judge decided it wasn’t as much of an emergency as Mary-Kate said it was, and denied her request. It seemed like the only option left for Mary-Kate was to pull out her collapsible travel cauldron and beg her twin sister Ashley Olsen to grab the freshest bottle of newt eyes she could find. But there won’t be any divorce potion needed, because Mary-Kate’s paperwork has finally been filed in the system.

Yesterday, New York’s Office of Court Administration ended its eight-week coronavirus hiatus on criminal and civil court proceedings, which means that people can file for divorce again. Mary-Kate has made it very clear that she wants nothing more in this life than to not be married to her old French husband, so no one should be surprised to learn that her divorce was the first to be filed. The New York Daily News reports that Mary-Kate’s lawyers were the first to electronically file divorce paperwork when the Office of Court Administration opened back up yesterday.

Now that their divorce is underway, a few sources close to Mary-Kate and Olivier spoke to Page Six about this, and think it will get messier. One source says that Olivier was in a rush to have Mary-Kate’s stuff moved out of their Gramercy apartment after he abruptly ended the lease, but even he hasn’t moved his stuff out. The source says that Olivier asked building management for permission to go in and get his stuff, which they reportedly denied, due to COVID-19 restrictions. So their unit is sitting as is. Mary-Kate meanwhile escaped to the country with some friends and her sister Ashley, and has reportedly dropped $325,000 on a summer rental in the Hamptons.

One source reiterates what we’ve heard before, which is that Mary-Kate and Olivier’s marriage started to break down because he wanted a stay-at-home wife type, while she was interested in being a working mom. The source adds that Olivier didn’t enter the marriage like that, but that he changed sometime after getting married. But apparently it was no surprise to people close to Mary-Kate that she’d get with Olivier in the first place. Page Six spoke to Mary-Kate’s former publicist, who says Olivier is exactly the type of guy for a rich mogul like an Olsen twin.

“The girls grew up around older, successful men from a very early age because they were so young when they started in [show] business. Both Ashley and Mary-Kate were used to dealing with older, decisive people who became very influential in their lives and careers and who they saw as peers. I can understand why Mary-Kate would be with a guy like him.”

One source says that Mary-Kate will be fine, money-wise, thanks to her prenuptial agreement, which secures her $250 million fortune. But also because she has a lot of confidence in herself. That kind of attitude will come in handy, apparently. One of Page Six’s sources describes Olivier as a “shark” when it comes to divorces, adding that his divorce from his first wife Charlotte Bernard was really messy.

A different source says that Olivier will get “more French” and “cold” as he fights Mary-Kate in divorce court. Oh really? The man who blindsided his current wife with a pseudo eviction notice isn’t afraid to bring peak-drama to a divorce? Never would have guessed! Although I do look forward to hearing about just how much more French Olivier will get. He’s already so French. I want to believe that it’s only a matter of time before we’ll see Olivier riding around the Upper East Side on a baguette, canoodling with his new girlfriend, Penelope Pussycat.
