The Nominations For The 2020 Golden Globes Are Out, And A Whole Lot Went To “Marriage Story” And “The Irishman”

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association kicked off awards season this morning at the crack of dawn with their nominations for the 2020 Golden Globe awards. The Golden Globes hold firm in their reputation as the Oscars’ boozy, messy, easily-confused cousin, and some of the nominations really reflect that.

For example, there are five nomination spots each for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Motion Picture Comedy, and not one of those spots was reserved for Hustlers. And yes I believe it could technically qualify for either category. Watching JLo execute a near-flawless scheme to drug and rob strip club patrons is a drama for the ages (luckily she did get recognized for her performance, as you’ll see later on in this post). And Constance Wu’s bangs were very funny. But instead, we’ve got lots of nominations for Marriage Story and The Irishman.

Marriage Story got six nominations: Best Picture Drama, Best Actress Drama (for Scarlett Johansson), Best Actor Drama (for Adam Driver), Best Supporting Actress (for Laura Dern), Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. JenniferLopez received her second Golden Globe nomination in 22 years. The last time she was nominated was in 1998, with a Best Actress for Selena. Unsurprisingly, she got herself a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Hustlers. In other “not shocking” news, Joaquin Phoenix got a Best Actor Drama nomination for Joker. Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie got nominated for Bombshell, which means Nicole Kidman did not. But really, anyone with working ears who heard Nicole’s Minnisotaustralia accent knows that’s not exactly a snub.

We’ve also got another The Martian situation. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood– a movie set against the Manson Family murders – was nominated in the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category. “Well, yeah – the way they portrayed my dad was a huge joke” probably thought Bruce Lee’s daughter.

In television, there weren’t too many surprises. Shows like The Crown, The Kominsky Method, Chernobyl, Fosse/Verdon, Barry, Succession, and Big Little Lies all got recognized. But so did The Morning Show, which got a Best Television Series Drama, and Best Performance in a Television Drama for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

And Paul Rudd got his first big acting nomination ever with a Best Performance in a Television Musical or Comedy for Living with Yourself. I bet the HFPA was like, “We would have nominated him for New Star of the Year, but we don’t have that category anymore. But it would have been perfect for a fresh young 21 year old actor like himself. Wait…what do you mean HE’S FIFTY?
