Michael Che Went There And Called Caitlyn Jenner “Fella” On SNL
Michael Che once again has decided to remind us that he’s still Saturday Night Live’s second most likely reason for an NBC spokesperson to work overtime on a Monday. On Saturday night, Michael Che made a joke about Caitlyn Jenner during Weekend Update. Except he didn’t call her Caitlyn, and he didn’t call her “her.” Casual transphobia? Scarlett Johansson is wondering if she picked the wrong Update host.
This all started with a joke about Kanye West. Michael joked about Kanye’s decision to perform all his old songs in a new G-rated way, because Kanye is that committed to his new Christian life. Michael wondered what the hell is happening to Kanye, which…honestly, that’s a valid point. via NewNowNext:
“At first I thought Kanye was losing his mind, and now I feel like he’s fine, he’s just turning into an old white lady. I mean, he used to be one of the coolest black dudes on Earth. Now he’s showing up to events in sweatpants and orthopedic sneakers, listening to Kenny G and trying to get black people to like Trump. It’s like, how long before this guy changes his name to Kathy?”
I’ll give credit where credit is due, and that’s that Kanye does have big “My name is Kathy and I demand to speak to your manager about this Walmart’s lack of MAGA hats” energy. But here’s where Michael got disinvited to any future Pride events for the foreseeable future.
“Now, you might think that I’m crazy, but about five years ago, there was a fella named Bruce Jenner, and he moved to Calabasas…”
The joke ended with Michael trailing off, as a pre-transition picture of Caitlyn was shown on screen. The audience didn’t really laugh, and NNN points out that someone in the audience could be heard saying, “No.” Then Colin Jost picked up and began his joke, and that was that. Lorne Michaels said back in 2015 that jokes about “Bruce Jenner” would not be off-limits. A week later, Caitlyn came out as transgender to Diane Sawyer. Seven months after that, Lorne had Donald Trump host the show. Lorne also allegedly hired the quickly-fired Shane Gillis this year to court right-wing viewers. So Lorne probably didn’t side-eye this:
Caitlyn might giggle at some transphobic jokes, but it’s not known if she’s laughing at Michael’s. The internet let Michael know where they stood on his choice to use Caitlyn’s dead name and an incorrect pronoun:
Trans women are women #SNL, even Caitlyn Jenner.

.@nbcsnl Michael Che’s transphobic and misogynist BS has to go. It’s awful and totally not funny. He obviously has nothing left in the tank.

OOf. Michael Che with a terrible joke about Kanye West potentially transitioning. Please stop that

I know Michael Che really wanted to make a joke about Bruce Jenner in the year 2019, but it didn’t even make any sense. According to Michael’s joke logic, the Kardashian corner of Calabasas is a spooky place that – surprise! – turns you into a totally different person. But that’s not exactly breaking news. I’m pretty sure when you approach the gate to the Kardashian compound, a dermatologist-turned-security guard is waiting with a syringe full of dermal filler, asking “Welcome! Lips or ass, your choice.”
