As Expected, Missy Elliott Shut Down The MTV VMAs

August 27, 2019 / Posted by:

We’ve known for a while that Missy Elliott was going to get the MTV VMA Video Vanguard Award as well as perform, so it’s amazing that the other performers showed up. But they did and probably just to take in the brilliance of Missy with a side of Alyson Stoner and a UFO!

Missy started her performance in what seemed to be a carnival mirror maze. That was a risky decision on Missy’s part, because seeing as how many narcissists were at the VMAs last night, it’s amazing that they didn’t jump on stage to get a closer look at their beauty in the mirrors. Even they knew not to anger the Gods by messing with Missy’s performance.

Missy got out of that mirror maze the only way Missy Elliott knows how: by putting on her iconic black bubble suit and flying through the air while singing The Rain. And she followed that up with a UFO. But one of the biggest moments was Missy bringing out that little girl from the Work It video. via Entertainment Weekly:

It should be a misdemeanor if you didn’t rock out to Missy Elliotts‘s amazing performance at the 2019 VMAs. The legendary rapper danced and freaked her heart out to a medley of her most famous tracks like “Get Ur Freak On,” “Lose Control,” and “Work It,” featuring an appearance by Alyson Stoner, who was a child dancer in the original 2002 music video for the track.

Watching a grown Alyson Stoner was a great reminder that I should be applying for my AARP card soon. Here’s Alyson’s moment, which had half of Twitter chanting, “Go Rose McGowan, go Rose McGowan!”

But where was Missy’s Funky White Sister!? It must be talent show time at the campgrounds. Talk about a missed opportunity.

Elliott’s performance, her first at the VMAs in more than a decade, was elevated by astonishing effects, as the stage recreated the settings for her classic music videos. She was a scarecrow in the cornfield to perform “Pass That Dutch,” which saw an alien spaceship hover over the stage.

The musician and dancer riled up the crowd, and celebrities like Taylor Swift and Jesse Tyler Ferguson could be seen jamming to the epic medley.

Following her performance, Elliott was recognized with the Video Vanguard Award.

Missy is a legend and she should not only get every Moonman for saving the VMAs last night, but I’m sure that not everyone was happy with her performance. John Travolta probably got the sads in a major way when he found out that UFO wasn’t real. Way to ruin John’s night, Missy.

Here’s the full performance:

And here she is in the press room:
