Matt Damon Bailed On The “Downsizing” Premiere

December 20, 2017 / Posted by:

Matt Damon’s promo tour for his latest film, Downsizing, has sort of snowballed into a disastrous hijacking of the #MeToo campaign. Matt has argued that there are “levels” to sexual harassment, and that men who haven’t sexually assaulted anyone deserve an enthusiastic pat on the back. Matt was supposed to attend the Downsizing premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night, but he didn’t go. I guess downsizing Matt Damon’s public appearances is one way to ensure more dumb thoughts about sexual harassment don’t come out of his mouth and into the microphone of a reporter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a rep for Paramount Pictures explained that Matt Damon was out of town dealing with “an ongoing family matter.” Sources tell THR that Matt’s dad has been ill. While Matt was able to avoid any awkward red carpet questions about his recent comments, his Downsizing co-stars weren’t so lucky. When Kristen Wiig was asked about Matt’s thoughts, she managed to side-step the messiness by focusing on her friends instead.

“It’s a delicate thing for everyone to talk about, and I feel like we’re all learning. I have friends who have just told me stories of things that happened to them that I had no idea about it. It’s just been a heartbreaking thing for everybody.”

Then there was James Van Der Beek, who is clearly gunning for an invitation to Matt and Ben’s next bro-down.

“You know, this is not something that plays out well in soundbites. I think Matt was trying to do some good and ask some questions that we’re all going to have to answer pretty soon. I don’t have the answers. We’re all figuring it out.”

Meanwhile, Laura Dern said she’s been too busy promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi to know what Matt has said. “Want to open Twitter every once in a while, you might” thought the ghost of Yoda. But she also played the poor, misunderstood Matt card.

“We’ve got to all figure out a way to work together” and not “bully [each other] on social media.”

If there was anyone missing Matt at the premiere, they couldn’t possibly have been missing him very long once Niecy Nash showed up and proved she’s clearly living her best life on the red carpet.

Paramount Pictures Special Screening Of 'Downsizing'

Niecy let it slip to THR at the premiere that another Reno 911! movie might be in the works. I’d be making the same face too if I had just given the world the gift of a possible return of Lt. Jim Dangle and his short-shorts.

Here’s more from the premiere on Monday night.
