“Big Little Lies” Is Getting A Second Season

Big Little Lies walked away with a closetful of Emmys this year, and HBO did the wise thing and decided to let everyone appreciate it for the art it was and tucked it away in the vault next to The Sopranos. Kidding, they’re totally bringing it back for a second season.

TVLine says their sources are saying HBO wants to start production in spring 2018 for season 2. BLL Executive Producer and writer Mr. Michelle Pfeiffer David E. Kelley told TVLine they were nearing scheduling stage:

“We’re kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together. It’s just a lot of logistical things. But I’m optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do. No decision has been made yet, but we’re hopeful. Where we left it, I felt like it did open the opportunity for a lot more storytelling.”

Translation: “We won eight Emmys, and now Reese Witherspoon wants her turn with the Best Actress statue.

Reese is going to be double-dipping on the boob tube, as she’s also attached to do that morning show drama with Jennifer Anniston. That show was just picked up for two seasons by Apple. HBO remains tight-lipped on if Big Little Lies is coming back. Jean-Marc Vallée, the show’s director, didn’t see a future for the show beyond its initial limited run, but pretty much everyone else is ready to go – even Miss Shailene “I’m more of a reader” Woodley.

On the one hand, I’m glad. I only like Nancy Meyers movies because of all the real estate porn, but she hasn’t been cranking out those middle-aged divorcee films like she used to. Big Little Lies was a gift from above because I could drink white wine from the box in ratty pajamas on my couch and watch Laura Dern swill Malbec wearing this season’s Escada while on her seaside patio. Stars…they’re just like us!

Some are pissy because the show was billed as a “limited series” (and won all its awards under that guise!), so coming back for a second season is a liiiiiitle bit of a cheat move. Obviously (SPOILER ALERT) Alexander Skarsgard will probably not be back for season 2. But I hope his  floppy prosthetic wiener makes a guest appearance or two.
