Paul Marciano Has Stepped Away From Guess While The Company Investigates Kate Upton’s Allegations

Last month, Guess co-founder Paul Marciano found himself in the #MetToo conversation after former Guess model Kate Upton vaguely accused him of being a creep. Paul responded by denying it and accusing her of getting fired for being a sloppy mess. Kate eventually came through with a comprehensive story told to TIME magazine detailing her working relationship with Paul. Kate’s allegations against Paul could be boiled down to the following: he was allegedly a horny old man with a mean streak who called Kate fat when she turned down his advances.

Paul again denied he’d done anything wrong, and promised his full cooperation with Guess as they investigated the matter. CNBC is reporting that while Guess investigates, Paul Marciano will step away from his position at the company.

Guess released a statement today saying that Paul will be relinquishing his day-to-day responsibilities pending the completion of their internal investigation that is currently being conducted by a specially-formed committee.

“The Company takes very seriously any allegations of sexual misconduct, is committed to maintaining a safe work environment, and looks forward to the completion of a thorough investigation of all the facts.”

Guess adds that Paul’s future with the company will be determined based on the results of the investigation. Paul released a statement on his decision to leave, saying:

“I have pledged my full cooperation to the Company, and I have the utmost confidence in our CEO, Victor Herrero, to continue leading the Company during this time.”

CNBC notes that Guess shares have fallen more than 15% this month, and that the dip coincides with Kate Upton’s allegations. Although they don’t say specifically if the two are directly related. Kate Upton hasn’t commented on Paul Marciano’s decision to step away.

It’s probably a good idea that Paul stays away from the office while Guess conducts their investigation. Paul is an old, rich guy. And in my experience, those are a type of people that can sometimes lack a filter. For example, I would not be surprised if this was a conversation that has happened:

Paul shouting from the toilet in his private bathroom: “Have you gotten to the part where that fat cow claims I fired her for being a fat cow?”

Investigator to Guess CEO: “Are you sure you want to keep this guy around?”
