There’s A “Twilight” TV Show In The Works

Well, it’s come to this. They’re doing a Twilight TV series. Sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that Stephenie Meyer’s magnum opus is in early development with Lionsgate Television. So far, no word if this is a remake or a continuation of the movies or something else entirely. The one thing we know for sure is that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart won’t be touching that shit with a ten-foot pole, even if that pole was made of cash, gold, and cash for gold.

Sources say Sinead Daly (Tell Me Lies, Raised by Wolves, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Get Down) is attached to write, and she’s working with Lionsgate to determine what the TV show will be about. Shit, the writer doesn’t even know what they’re doing yet. This whole series could be written as a stream of consciousness the night before it’s due! Apparently, there’s no network attached, and Lionsgate is planning to lead the development of the project before shopping the rights to potential buyers. When? They have no clue.

Sources say Stephenie (she spells it without an “a”, eh?) Meyer is expected to be involved, so don’t hold your breath for a diverse take on the famously pasty white franchise. Wyck Godrey and Erik Feig, who produced and distributed the Twilight movie series, are attached to executive produce. The Hollywood Reporter article makes it clear: Lionsgate wants to milk the fuck outta their undead, sparkles-in-the-sun cash cow:

Twilight is a major piece of Lionsgate’s library. In 2017, five years after Breaking Dawn: Part 2 wrapped up Meyer’s film adaptation, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told Wall Street during an earnings call that “there are a lot more stories to be told, and we’re ready to tell them when our creators are ready to tell those stories,” in reference to both Twilight and The Hunger Games franchises.

So, there ya go. First, there was a Harry Potter TV series; now we’re getting a Twilight one. It all seems so… soon. Here I thought the nostalgia cycle was supposed to be 20-30 years long. We should be rebooting movies that came out in 2003. Nothing later! Where’s our Mystic River mini-series? The Life of David Gale reboot? Kangaroo Jack: the TV show??
