The Trailer For “Renfield” Starring Nicolas Cage As Dracula Is Out

Last spring, we got a sneak peek of Nicolas Cage in full-on Dracula drag for his role in Renfield. The horror comedy stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Dracula’s brainwashed servant who eats bugs and does his dark lord’s bidding. Now the trailer has finally been released, and, dare I say, the movie actually looks pretty good? Full disclosure: I’m a Cage-head. Have been since I stumbled across Face/Off on the TBS Superstation as a child. So the bias here is stronger than Cage’s performance as twins Charlie and Donald Kaufman in Adaptation (2002).

The Hollywood Reporter says Universal dropped the two-and-a-half first look at the movie this morning. In the trailer, Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield bemoans his exhausting, murderous career as Dracula’s vampire lackey.

The only problem is that the modern world is, as he says, “a dangerous place.” But with the arrival of Rebecca Quincy, a traffic cop played by Awkwafina, Renfield finally begins to feel seen and appreciated. “Did I see you cut a guy with a decorative serving platter?” she asks following an all-out brawl in a local bar where Renfield comes out on top. “It’s all in the wrist,” he responds.

It’s a new relationship that makes him question serving as the vampire villain’s “Postmates,” in the Chris McKay-directed movie that promises the possibility of a new lease on life and perhaps a shot at redemption for one of horror’s most notable henchmen.

Nicolas Cage’s Dracula only appears briefly at the very end of the trailer. Nic said he studied other Dracula performances to bring the famous vampire to life and lost weight so he could pay homage to David Bowie’s Thin White Duke persona. Here’s the trailer:

Renfield is set to be released in theaters on April 14. That’s right, theaters. Nicolas Cage is officially over his straight-to-VOD phase after paying back his tax debts. Insert Lucille Bluth GIF “Good for her!”
