Netflix Will Stream Johnny Depp’s Next Film, “La Favorite”

Any fans of the incredibly enjoyable Oscar-winning 2018 film The Favourite are likely gasping in shock that not only would someone remake such a good movie so soon, let alone have the questionable judgment to cast Johnny Depp in such a thing. But that’s not what’s happening here. A French movie called La Favorite is currently in production and will begin filming this summer. It just so happens to have Johnny Depp in it, and this will be his first film role since winning his messy defamation lawsuit that wrapped last month. And unlike many of Johnny’s more recent film appearances, this movie will hit theaters, then be available for streaming, courtesy of Netflix.

We have already heard that there’s no chance that Johnny will ever return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But that doesn’t mean he’s done with wigs, buckled shoes, or an aggressive amount of costume jewelry. The Wrap reports that La Favorite is about King Louis XV, aka Louis the Beloved, aka the father of Louis XVI, who was the guy who married Marie Antoinette (and would later be the final King of France):

La Favorite from director Maïwenn is set to film this summer and premiere in 2023. Bloomberg first reported Netflix was connected to the film. However, the streamer is not co-financing the film, according to the individual who spoke to TheWrap. The film will begin streaming 15 months after its theatrical release. Depp will begin shooting across France later this summer for about three months. The film is being produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Paris-based Why Not Productions. Wild Bunch International will handle international sales.

Johnny Depp and Netflix, a perfect combination! One claims to be broke, while the other is simply existing under the implication that money is just a little tight right now. La Favorite will start streaming on Netflix in 2024.

Last summer, the director of Minamata, a biopic about photographer W. Eugene Smith (played by Johnny Depp), claimed that MGM buried his movie, because they didn’t want anything to do with the mess that is/was/might forever will be Johnny Depp. Essentially, MGM didn’t want the bad publicity that would come with a Johnny Depp-starring picture. Or there’s Johnny’s 2018 film City of Lies, which might be more famous for the ongoing assault lawsuit it spawned, than how well it did at the box office (which was pretty bad). So La Favorite has a pretty good chance of actually being watched by several sets of eyes. Hey, I didn’t say human eyes. There are many dogs and cats who need Netflix on the TV when their owners go out for a couple of hours so that they don’t feel too lonely.
