A Bloodhound Won “Best In Show” At The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show For The First Time Ever

Most times when “best in show” makes a blip on my radar, it’s because I’m trying to decide which Real Housewives of New York wife I “hate least in show” while I “watch” (i.e. scroll my phone for the entire duration with the wives’ screeching as my background noise). Ramona Singer never wins because she’s always having to be flapping her jowls about how taking a casual dump on the floor isn’t a big deal or that she didn’t make a racist comment. In much more distinguished, innocent, and adorable flappy jowl news about someone who can shit on a floor and it not be an awkward thing–a dog named Trumpet strutted his majestic floppers all the way to victory, becoming the first bloodhound to ever win the coveted “Best in Show” at this year’s 146th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York.

Trumpet, a 4-year-old from Saint Joseph, Illinois, became the certified goodest boy and also made history. He whooped the asses of 3,500 dogs across more than 200 different breeds to become the HBIC (head bloodhound in charge, of course). According to USA Today, Trumpet is the first of his breed to snag the best in show honor, although his papa came close a few years ago.

Trumpet the Bloodhound’s selection marked history. He’s the first Bloodhound to ever win Best in Show in Westminster’s 146-year history. A Bloodhound first entered Westminster, the second oldest continuously running sport event in the U.S. behind the Kentucky Derby, in 1978. Broadcasters labeled his win an “upset.”

He’s the son of Nathan, who won the Hound Group in 2014, but Nathan fell short of the grand prize. His son didn’t. “I am so excited for Trumpet,” said handler Heather Buehner, who co-owns and bred the “goofball.” She added, “He has a lot of attitude and he’s a little crazy.”

Trumpet even rose to the top to beat out a high-class doggo that belongs to an NFL player.

The champion was selected by Dr. Don Sturz, a breeder, handler and former Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show analyst for Fox Sports, who served as the sole judge for Best in Show. Sturz gave the runner-up honor – Reserve Best in Show – to Winston the French Bulldog, who is co-owned by NFL defensive lineman Morgan Fox.

Here is Trumpet’s defining moment at Westminster (but I’m sure he would say that his own defining moment was that time Heather forgot that she already fed him once so she fed him an extra time):

After Trumpet’s crowning glory, he got to stop by Good Morning America with his handler, Heather, and on-air analyst for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Gail Miller Bisher to chat with Amy Robach:

And in continuing the quest to woo his public, he won over Robin Roberts between segments:

Heather said that Trumpet’s interests include digging holes, giving kisses, and playing with his dog friends. Biggest congrats, Trumpet! Keep transcending your daddy’s aspirations and winning over all of the people you meet. You better have gotten all of the Beggin’ Strips and some extra belly rubs at BARE MINIMUM just for continuing to be your sweet, saggy, pendulous-eared self–which in turn, probably bought Heather many more understated skirt suits and sensible flats to sashay you around whatever ring comes next.
