Kevin Spacey Will Be Starring In A Hungarian-Mongolian Production About Genghis Khan’s Grandson

Kevin Spacey’s slow creep (emphasis on creep) back to the top of the A-list from the top of the other A-list (assholes to avoid), continues apace. Thankfully, Kevin has a long way yet to creep, and this time, he’s creepy-crawling all the way from Mongolia by way of Hungary. Deadline reports that Kevin has been cast in his biggest post-#me-too movie to date. He’ll be starring in a historical drama 1242 – Gateway to the West playing an Italian Cardinal sent by The Pope to Hungary as they are defending a fort against the Mongolian army led by Genghis Khan’s grandson. It’s a Hungarian-Mongolian production co-starring Julia Roberts’ brother Eric Roberts, and Christopher Lambert.

Now, the movie poster and Deadline both list Terrance Stamp among the cast, which had me hoping he took the role solely for the purpose of sabotage, but Rolling Stone says “although Deadline notes that Terence Stamp was cast in the film, his representatives told Rolling Stone he is not involved in any way,” and it doesn’t show up on his IMDB page. So that just lets us know what a top-rate production this is bound to be. Kevin’s knees are going to be absolutely shredded from crawling all this way by the time he gets invited to participate in The Masked Singer.

According to Deadline, 1242 will be shopped at Cannes this year. Which is a big creep forward. The closest Kevin’s last movie got to Cannes was a poster in the lobby. In addition to that movie, the Italian production The Man Who Drew God co-starring Faye Dunnaway where he plays a falsely accused (emphasis on accused) pedophile, Kevin also starred in the independent film Peter Five Eight, sporting a busted and dusted wig, that is currently, and perhaps eternally, in post-production. But now it looks like he’s back in all his pontificating glory.

The UK/Hungarian/Mongolian co-production represents Spacey’s biggest feature to date since several people accused him of sexual harassment and unwanted advances in 2017.

Principal photography will commence in October 2022 in Hungary and Mongolia on the shoot, which also stars Eric Roberts, Christopher Lambert, Terence Stamp and newcomers Jeremy Neumark-Jones and Genevieve Florence. Veteran Hungarian director Peter Soos will helm the film which is scripted by Aron Horvath and Joan Lane and produced by Bill Chamberlain and Kornel Sipos.

If this was anybody other than Kevin, I’d swear he was only working this hard for the money. He does owe Netflix $31 million for violating their sexual harassment policies on House of Cards. And all those lawyers (and god knows who else) he paid to make his legal problems disappear can’t have been cheap. But one look at the poster for this tells us all we need to know about why Kevin keeps starring (emphasis on starring) in whatever he can get.

Kevin also has a role playing Croatia’s first president, Franjo Tudjman in a documentary that premiered this week in Zagreb. Skip to 2:23 to see Kevin use this as an opportunity to trot out his beloved Frank Underwood.

Won’t somebody please think of the Croatian school children who will be so confused as to why their first President sounded like Foghorn Leghorn? I can’t wait for the big scene in 1242 he writes for himself where he gets real blustery and pounds the desk with his giant Cardinal ring.
