Avril Lavigne And Mod Sun Are Engaged
So tragic. Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker only got a few days’ worth of attention before being swiftly replaced in the news cycle by another marriage-based story involving tattooed music types and mall punk vibes. Avril Lavigne announced earlier today that she’s engaged to her boyfriend of about a year, the man with a name like an unauthorized child of Frank Zappa, Mod Sun.
Last year, rumors started up that 37-year-old Avril and 35-year-old Mod Sun, whose real name is Derek Ryan Smith, were a thing after Mod was seen with a tattoo that read LAVIGNE across the back of his neck. You could say they’ve already made this relationship as permanent as one can get, but they decided to take it one step further and make it legal as well. Avril posted pictures on Instagram along with the caption: – en français – “Yes! I love you forever. Sunday, March 27, 2022.” And as you can see by the numerous cameo appearances by the Eiffel Tower, the proposal took place in Paris. That might explain all the French in Avril’s caption (but then again, the woman is a member of the French Canadian delegation, so it could have just been her poutine DNA jumping out).

In 2019, Mod Sun “married” Bella Thorne, who he was in a throuple with, but it was never made legal. Avril has been married twice before, to Sum41’s lead singer Deryck Whibley from 2006 to 2010, and to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger from 2013 to 2015.
People magazine got their hands on some exclusive pictures of Avril and Mod, and they note that the two started dating while working together on Avril’s album Love Sux (how ironic). As seen by those completely candid and spontaneous engagement pictures, Mod dropped to one knee and proposed during a boat ride along the Seine river. She says the proposal was a “total surprise” (despite there being a professional photographer three feet away from them? Alrighty.). Her ring is a custom-made heart-shaped diamond, which is apparently a tribute to the rings they both just so happened to be wearing when they first met. via People:
It was the most perfect, romantic proposal I could ever ask for. We were in Paris on a boat in the Seine River. We had a violin player, champagne and roses. It felt like time stood still, and it was just the two of us in the moment,” Lavigne, 37, tells PEOPLE exclusively of the proposal.
“It has the words ‘Hi Icon’ engraved in it, which were the first words he ever said to me. And it has Mod + Avril on the inside,” Lavigne says. “He knew from the very beginning I wanted a heart shaped diamond because on the day we met, we had matching heart shaped paved rings on. We’ve worn them every day since, so its only fitting to have a heart-shaped engagement ring. I love it so much.”

I totally understand having “Mod + Avril” engraved on a heart-shaped engagement ring – that’s pretty standard in the pantheon of semi-cheesy celebrity jewelry engravings. But “Hi Icon“??? Mod didn’t have to be so extra and over-the-top! He already has her name tattooed on his neck, no one is doubting his commitment to this woman. Luckily that diamond is so big and gaudy, it will blind anyone from discovering the cringe-making message engraved inside.
