Mel Gibson Quits An Interview When Asked About The Oscars Slap

April 3, 2022 / Posted by:

The Slap delivered by Will Smith to Chris Rock’s face at this year’s Oscars continues to be the #1 question that every reporter asks nearly every famous or famous-ish type person. Chris Rock himself hasn’t said much, and Will Smith continues to do damage control including resigning from The Academy while waiting for them to deliver their punishment to him. And just when you thought that there wasn’t another celebrity left who hasn’t publicly talked about this, Mel Gibson was asked. Yep, we’ve gotten to that stage of this moment. We’re asking MEL GIBSON, a man known for his very balanced views and actions, for his take on this mess.

Mel joined Jess Watters Primetime on Fox News (makes sense) to discuss his film, Father Stu. The interview started normally with Jesse Watters asking Mel if he’s watched Fox News recently. Nothing like plugging your cable news station during your show. However, Jesse thought that doing a standard movie interview was too boring for his audience of old people and decided to ask Mel for his opinion about Will Smith giving Chris Rock whatfor. Jess could’ve asked Mel to recreate the salute he did for Trump last year, but instead decided to ask about the week-old slap. Shockingly, Mel didn’t take the question too well. via The Wrap:

“You understand it probably better than a lot of people, with your career,” Watters led in with, transitioning from the topic of Gibson’s latest movie, “Father Stu,” which they had discussed for about five minutes (see the full interview below). “And I was wondering if, you know, you had been the one that jumped up out of his seat and slapped Chris Rock, if you would have been treated the same way, Mel?”

A grinning Gibson then points his finger into the camera, spreads his hand and shakes his palm, as if to say, “No, don’t do that,” before an off-camera voice cuts things off.

Oooh, that off-camera person saved Gibson! Who knows what kind of tirade he would have spouted if that disembodied voice hadn’t stepped in. Mel awkwardly laughed and shifted in his seat as if his robot body malfunctioned due to boiling rage. Jesse kept pressing for an answer, but Mel’s handler wouldn’t let it fly. Upon realizing he wouldn’t get Gibson’s REAL thoughts, Jesse ended the interview and the Mel waved goodbye. Here’s the full interview. Start at 4:42 if you don’t care about Father Stu:

I think Jesse was expecting Mel to go on one of his infamous racist rants and catch it live on tape. Fortunately for everyone, it didn’t go as planned. But, unfortunately for everyone, we now know that Mel has a new movie and is still out there getting paid to act in films. That’s cancel culture for ya!
