“Mission: Impossible VII” Has Reportedly Cost $290 Million To Make So Far

Mission: Impossible VII is really taking its name a bit too seriously, because it’s reportedly been a mess to make and is not coming out until July 14, 2023, after yet another pushback in January. And Variety heard from sources who say that the movie is reaching $290 million in production costs thanks to COVID-19 and being a big-budget action movie in the first place. Yikes, that’s pricey! Tom Cruise can’t be happy at surely is at risk of losing it on some crew members again. Don’t stand too close together!

The M:I franchise has made over $3.5 billion worldwide thanks to its six movies, with the most recent, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, being the most successful yet and earning $791 million worldwide on a $190 million production budget. It’s no shock that M:I 7 is expensive as shit, as Tom has been Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?-ing it up across the globe from Italy to Poland, to Norway, to the UAE, and more. Not to mention that jumping from trains probably doesn’t come cheap. And apparently, the exorbitant costs of filming broke their budget back in the summer. Distributor, Paramount is now kicking millions into the movie because the co-producers at Skydance already met their contractual obligations, money-wise.

The budget headaches reached a crescendo last summer when Mission: Impossible distributor Paramount was faced with shouldering roughly $50 million in overages by itself. The issue was that co-producer Skydance had already met its cap in terms of financial contributions, according to two sources. They declined to exceed their contractual requirements, around $240 million, and pony up the additional funds that Cruise and McQuarrie said were needed to complete the movie.

Coronavirus also stopped production numerous times. At one point, Tom got a cruise ship for the crew to live on during filming.

Variety adds that China is important to the movie since Fallout made $180 million in the country. But tensions between the US and China have “impacted the country’s appetite for Hollywood films, cutting into their grosses in the important market.” But Tom has some time to SINGLE-HANDEDLY fix China-America relations since the movie isn’t scheduled to be released for another year, but he needs money quickly since the plan is to film the eighth and final movie right after the seventh so they can seamlessly send off Tom’s Ethan Hunt character in a final “culmination.” Oh shit, does Ethan Hunt reach OT VIII?

The plan is for the seventh and eighth films to serve as a sendoff for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character– a “culmination” of the entire series, as one insider described it–which has also upped the pressure on the star and McQuarrie to deliver a slam-bang farewell to the super spy. The two films were originally scheduled to shoot concurrently, but that plan was abandoned. The eighth film is about to go into production in South Africa.

Two big-budget action movies back-to-back? In a pandemic?! Tom better call his bestie David Miscavige, because it’s time to dip into some of those tax-free Scientology funds Leah Remini is always talking about!
