Mariah Carey Has A Festive New Christmas Song Called “Fall In Love At Christmas”
Though I have tried in the past, many times, in fact, to reject, ignore or otherwise turn my back on the ubiquitous harbinger of the Holiday season, All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey. But I, a mere mortal with mortal ears, cannot resist the siren call of its jingle-jangle perfection and I WILL be making a fool out of myself in the produce aisle of my local grocery store by squeezing my eyes shut, one finger to my ear and the other finger going every which way as I trill along from now until January 2022. So sue me. Am I not an American? Do I not bleed red, white, and glitter? Well, according to NPR, Mariah has a new Christmas song out today called Fall in Love at Christmas feat. Khalid & Kirk Franklin and I’m about to listen to it for the very first time. I hope you will join me on this festive journey of discovery!
NPR calls FILAC “a carol for grown folks several seasons into their love” and the video features cozy pajamas, wine glasses filled with generous pours of Mariah’s Black Irish Cream liqueur, prayer hands, and a CGI Mariah humping a Tuscan column in the snow. So we’re off to a festive (if uncanny, that cannot be her real face) start! Here’s the video.
Come on, whistle tone! I’m not mad at it. Who doesn’t love a terrier in a sweater?! Here’s NPR’s review:
“Fall in Love at Christmas” is a carol for grown folks several seasons into their love and the kind of sumptuous torch song that Carey hasn’t sung in a minute. She delivers topline melody and sinuous runs in classic Carey form, and Khalid turns out to be a great duet partner: The 23-year-old R&B singer knows no one can outdo Carey, so his harmonies add just the right amount of tinsel. But recognizing that lovers long into a relationship gotta balance romance with the little ones, “Fall in Love at Christmas” cleverly turns on a dime to a full-on Kirk Franklin stomp, as Carey’s melisma decorates the gospel rave-up.
Oh right, I guess there were lyrics in there. FILAC is certainly more memorable than 2010’s Oh Santa, which she performed with Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Hudson last year on her Apple TV special (source: I forgot that happened). But since nobody has the jingle balls to take her on as the undisputed Queen of Christmas, FILAC is sure to be a hit. It’s way more enjoyable than the root canal you’re probably getting when you hear it for the 80 millionth time.
