Last night, very tragic news gave everyone flashbacks to the horrific accidental death of Brandon Lee. While filming a scene for the western movie Rust in New Mexico, Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that hit two people. The director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, was killed, and the director, Joel Souza, was left injured. Halyna was only 42 years old.

TMZ reports that the tragedy happened at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a movie ranch in Santa Fe where Rust was filming. Alec fired a prop gun he thought was loaded with blanks. Halyna was killed and Joel was taken to the hospital where he’s still being treated.

Alec Baldwin was filming a scene for a movie that required someone to fire a gun loaded with blanks, but when the gun discharged either shrapnel or a bullet hit 2 people on set … one of whom had to be airlifted to a hospital…

The 42-year-old director of photography died from her injuries … according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Department has confirmed it was Baldwin who pulled the trigger during the gun accident. 42-year-old director of photography Halyna Hutchins tragically died from her injuries, and director Joel Souza is currently at a hospital getting treatment for his.

Cops say no charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation remains active.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) said in a statement to union members that the prop gun had a live round in it. via Variety:

“A live single round was accidentally fired on set by the principal actor, hitting both the Director of Photography, Local 600 member Halyna Hutchins, and Director Joel Souza,” the union told members. “Both were rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, we lost Sister Hutchins who passed from the wound.”

In the email that IATSE Local 44 sent, Secretary-Treasurer Anthony Pawluc said the event was “an accidental weapons discharge.”

“Local 44 has confirmed that the Props, Set Decoration, Special Effects and Construction Departments were staffed by New Mexico crew members,” Pawluc said. “There were no Local 44 members on the call sheet. On behalf of Local 44’s Officers, Executive Board and Staff, our thoughts and prayers go out to Halyna and her family. We also send good thoughts to Joel and his family for a full recovery.”

There’s obviously an open investigation as to how this tragedy happened. No charges have been filed yet.

During the past couple of weeks, Halyna has been posting about filming in New Mexico:

And after the incident, a photographer with The Santa Fe New Mexican, who was on set, got pictures of Alec looking understandably distraught as fuck:

Alec spoke about the accident this morning and said he’s heartbroken for Halyna’s family and is cooperating with the investigation:

And many in Hollywood, including people who worked with Halyna, have paid tribute to her:
